2 Question # 1: What were the MAIN causes of WWI? Describe one of the four major causes in detail.

3 Answer to Question # 1: Militarism: Building up military forces led to an arms race and strong military forces Alliances: Prior to WWI, alliances were formed which led to an all out European conflict once war broke out Imperialism: Colonies brought wealth and power to the mother country and Germany wanted to be a super power like Britain Nationalism: Pride in one’s country led to countries competing for wealth and power

5 Answer to Question # 2: Ferdinand was the prince to the Austro-Hungarian thrown He was assassinated due to Serbian nationalism who wanted to be independent from the A-H empire

7 Answer to Question # 3: Due to pre-war alliances, once Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbian all of the rest of the European powers joined the war

9 Answer to Question # 4: Forts: Due to ample land and suitable climate Georgia was a good location to build military forts to train soldiers for WWI Shorts: Due to the abundant supply of cotton, textiles were produced and sent to Europe to support the war Ports: Savannah and Brunswick were good deep water ports to send troops and supplies to Europe Transports: Good infrastructures of roads and railroad tracks allowed for supplies and troops to move quickly from the interior of Georgia to the port cities

17 Answer to Question # 8: The drought led to crop failure. Most of Georgia’s citizens were farmers or worked in the textile mills, so the drought led to a depression in GA in the 1920s.

18 Question # 9: How did the boll weevil impact cotton production throughout the United States? How did this hurt Georgia’s economy?

19 Answer to Question # 9: Boll weevil was a small grayish beetle that destroys the cotton plan by eating the seeds before it flowers. Hurt GA since cotton was grown in abundance

21 Answer to Question # 10: It was the start of an economic downturn that led to the Great Depression

22 Question # 11: What were some of the major economic reasons that led to the Stock Market Crash of 1929? Describe each in detail.

23 Answer to Question # 11: Bank Failures: Loaned too much money on credit and couldn’t pay back investments after the crash. People lost their life savings. Reduction in purchasing: People were fearful of losing their money so they stopped buying products, leading to more unemployment. High Protective Tariffs: High taxes on exports which led to Europe not being able to pay off their war debts to the U.S. Over borrowing: Too many people buying on credit they couldn’t afford throughout the 1920s Overproduction: America continued to turn out high yields though European economy recovered and didn’t depend on American products as much. Surplus of Agricultural and industrial goods. Farms went into foreclosure. Laissez Faire: Hoovers plan to recover the economy was non-government interference in the market place which turned out to be a disaster since the economic downturn was too big for businesses to fix themselves.

24 Question # 12: Who was Eugene Talmadge? Why was he known as “Mean Gene?”

25 Answer to Question # 12: Talmadge was a southern white supremacist who did not like government intervention. He especially disliked relief efforts, public welfare, and federal assistance programs. He used federal funds to build highways and not to provide relief to people struggling to find jobs. Eugene got the Dean of Georgia Southern University fired for his plans to integrate (open the school to members of all races) the school.

28 Question # 14: What was the intended purpose and impact of the New Deal program the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC)?

29 Answer to Question # 14: Provided jobs for young single men building forest trails and roads, planting trees to reforest the land and control flooding and building parks. Raised morale for young men who were able to earn money to send home to support their families

30 Question # 15: What was the intended purpose and impact of the New Deal program the Rural Electrification Act (REA)?

31 Answer to Question # 15: Rural Electrification Act brought electricity to poor rural farmers throughout the U.S. It raised the standard of living for these people and create jobs running lines

33 Answer to Question # 16: Government subsidies were paid to farmers to destroy their crops & livestock and only plant certain crops to lower the surplus of agricultural products to raise the price of crops

35 Answer to Question # 17: - A federal administration put in place in 1935 in which younger people work and pay taxes to take care of older citizens and those who cannot work.

Utilizing both of these pictures (documents) discuss the impact of the Great Depression and the response of the Federal Government under President Roosevelt.
