1.2 Types of Ability and Skill
What types of ability are there? What types of skill are there?
2
Types of Ability Perceptual Ability
Receiving Recognising Selecting Organising Perceptual Ability The process of dealing with information which we receive from our senses As a defender has 2 attackers running towards him there is a lot of information to receive Needs to organise the information so that a course of action can be decided upon (Cognition) All this needs to be in a split second Perceptual abilities allow you to process information from the display (environment)… Speed of perception- how fast you can compare various elements within the display Being able to divide your attention between different parts of the display Analysing movement and predicting future movement/position Selection- Filtering out any unwanted information from the display.
3
Types of Ability Motor Ability
Underlying characteristics which contribute to a limb or limbs moving successfully Believed to underpin and determine an individual's potential skill development Fleishmann (1964)14 motor abilities with skills requiring a combination of two or more of these in various quantities Criticised as research was done in stable (consistent) conditions which… Doesn’t factor in the changing environment of sport Decision making not taken into consideration
4
Types of Skill Perceptual Skill
How we select, organise and recognise information gained from our senses. Built on our perceptual abilities Developed via maturation and practice Learning how to select the relevant information is essential as you often have information overload when playing Hearing a teammates call over the noise of a crowd.
5
Types of Skill Cognitive Skill
Is the selection process where you choose which action to use and when. Can be improved via experience… When playing an opponent in tennis if you know their strengths and weaknesses Develop by watching match footage of previous games If technique has become habitual (automatic) it is easier to give more of your attention to cognition as you aren’t thinking about required muscle contractions or technical points
6
Types of Skill Psychomotor Skill
Our physical movements which are controlled by the brain. They will always be pre-determined towards an object or outcome Based on :- Information from the perceptual skill Decision making from the cognitive skill Perceptual Skill Recognising information in the display Cognitive Skill Choosing an appropriate course of action Psycho-Motor Skill Performing the appropriate course of action
