UN forewords: to be co- signed by the Chair of the UN Statistical Commission (UNSC) and a co-Chair of UN-GGIM. CEOS Messages: to be co- signed by ESA (editing team) and 2018 CEOS Chair (P.Brunet) The United Nations Statistical Commission, established in 1947, is the highest body of the global statistical system. It is a Functional Commission of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). It brings together the Chief Statisticians from member states from around the world. It is the highest decision making body for international statistical activities especially the setting of statistical standards, the development of concepts and methods and their implementation at the national and international level. The UN Statistical Commission (UNSC) has the mandate for the development and implementation of the Global Indicator Framework. The Statistical Commission oversees the work of the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), and The United Nations initiative on Global Geospatial Information Management (UN-GGIM) aims at playing a leading role in setting the agenda for the development of global geospatial information and to promote its use to address key global challenges. It provides a forum to liaise and coordinate among Member States, and between Member States and international organizations. The committee is mandated, among other tasks, to provide a platform for the development of effective strategies on how to build and strengthen national capacity on geospatial information. In March 2015 at its forty-sixth session, the United Nations Statistical Commission created an Inter-agency and Expert Group on SDG Indicators (IAEG-SDGs), which is composed of representatives from a regionally-balanced group of Member States and includes regional and international agencies as observers Proposed Global Indicator Framework for the SDG Goals and Targets submitted to UNSC-47 on 8-11 March 2016 for approval by UNSC.

Annual update cycle completed and available online: database.eohandbook.com Responses received from 28 CEOS agencies 14 new mission records added, 226 existing records updated 19 new instrument records added, 132 existing records updated Currently features operating or planned for launch in next 15 years: 322 Earth observing satellite missions 913 instruments
