© Presto Plans Read the paragraph below and find examples of metaphor, simile, onomatopoeia, personification, oxymoron and/or alliteration. When Rick broke the bad news, my world started spinning around. It felt as if he had stabbed me in the back. He turned towards the table, took his keys and wallet, and said, “Have a good life.” The angry door banged shut. Any love I had for him walked out with him when he left. Months later, I saw him in a coffee shop. I attempted to appear invisible, so he wouldn’t come over to talk to me, but I was unsuccessful. When they came face to face, an awkward silence crept up between us. I waited for an apology, but like a heartless monster, he pretended as if nothing happened.

I’m going to give you 10 more minutes to finish your Allegory Packet from yesterday. Make sure all of your definitions are glued in the correct place! (Hint: you might want to compare with other groups ) If there are any discrepancies, have BOTH groups come up to me. I’ll let you know who’s right!

The Russian Revolution / Animal Farm Allegory
An allegory is a story written on two different levels; where the characters, plot, setting, and events are often meant to represent something lese.

Karl marx A economist and philosopher; developed the idea for Communism

Marxism An economic system based upon the ideas of Marx; in Marxism, the public shares equal ownership of all business, industry, and farming

communism A form of government where all people living within a nation are treated equally: equal work, equal pay, equal land; etc… It would get rid of social classes (no lower, middle, and upper class)

Communist manifesto A book written by Karl Marx that defines the “rules” of Communism

L’Internationale The inspiring French anthem used by many groups desiring change; was used to inspire the Russian people to overthrow the tsar.

A new nation needs a new name; Russia and the surroundings countries became known as the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics

Josef stalin Communist dictator of the Soviet Union; took complete control after the death of Lenin; controlled the people with fear and violence

Leon trotsky The third leader of the Soviet Union (with Lenin and Stalin); true believer in Marxism and Communism; worked very hard to make it happen but was not as powerful as Stalin and was eventually exiled and murdered by Stalin

A Christian-based church closed down by Stalin after the revolution (he did not want the people to think anything-even God-was more powerful/important than him; he later re- opened the churches under his control where his message was spoken

White russians Supporters of the tsar; did not want Russia to change; did not support Stalin or Communism; most left Russia because they feared they’d be killed by Stalin White = purity

bolsheviks Political party of supporters of Communism and Stalin; means “majority”; the largest number of people in Russia supported (or believed they supported) this party Red = Communism

Mensheviks Minority political supporters of Trotsky’s “old way”, which was the way of “true” Communism; very few* supported this group due to fear of Stalin * Very unfortunate because Trotsky’s beliefs may have led the USSR to positive change for the people.

5 year plans Stalin’s plan to completely industrialize the Soviet Union in only 5 years; the people were overworked and underpaid; the plans failed 6 times.

Forced collectivization
Stalin forced farmers off of their land and collected (stole) the land, crops, and livestock for the government control; many farmers destroyed their crops and animals rather than give them up; many farmers were then murdered so Stalin could easily steal their land

politburo Means “political bureau” - a group of men led and chosen by Stalin to make decisions for the country

kgb Stalin’s secret spies and secret police; carried out murders of anyone who threatened or went against Stalin

Moscow purge trials Stalin placed anyone on trial who he thought was a threat and had them either imprisoned in labor camps or executed. He would make problems “disappear”.

Adolf hitler Nazi dictator of Germany; evil man, imprisoned and killed millions of innocent people; Stalin looked up to him because he had such complete power and control over his people

nazism German National Socialists led by Hitler; grew into a very conservative party that ruled with fear and violence; believed that Aryans were superior to all other races and people.

democracy A form of government where the people choose who they wish to represent them in government

Dictator An absolute leader with complete control and power who rules his people with fear and violence

socialism An economic system in which no one has private property or business; all business and property is regulated by the government.

Non-aggression pact A deal made between Germany and the Soviet Union that they would not fight or invade one another during World War II; Germany violated the pact by invading Russian territory

rasputin An odd, corrupt religious man; very close with the tsar’s family, he influenced their beliefs Very stubborn and stuck in his beliefs; he also would not die!
