2 Learning Target I can determine the value of a digit in a given number. I can determine how much smaller or larger a digit is when moved to a different place value. Repeat after me. If the pink gorilla eats watermelon every night, how much watermelons does he eat? © One Stop Teacher Shop

3 Our Class Goal Determine who is correct using your knowledge of place value. Wallace and Logan were arguing about the size of 2 numbers. Wallace thought eight-tenths was ten times larger than eight-hundredths. Logan thought eight-hundredths was ten times larger than eight-tenths. Who is correct? If the pink gorilla eats watermelon every night, how much watermelons does he eat? © One Stop Teacher Shop

4 Our Goal Write in a place-value chart. The value of the ones digit is _______. The value of the tenths digit is ______. The value of the 3 in the ones place is _________ times as much as the value of the 3 in the place to its right. Hundreds Tens Ones . Tenths Hundredths If the pink gorilla eats watermelon every night, how much watermelons does he eat? © One Stop Teacher Shop

5 The value of a digit is based on where it is placed within a number.
It is the digit times the place value it is in. For Example: 35.526 The digit 3 is in the tens place, so 3 x 10 = 30 The digit 2 is in the hundredths place, so 2 x 1/100 = 2/100 or 0.02. 6 The Value of a Digit The value of a digit is based on where it is placed within a number. You Help Me: . 3, 1 2 9 3 8 Let’s name each digits value. Randomly select digits, and then write them on the columns over the digit. The Value of a Digit The value of a digit is based on where it is placed within a number. You Try: What is the value of the digit 7? What is the value of the digit 8? What is the value of the digit 4? Let’s name each digits value. Randomly select digits, and then write them on the columns over the digit. What is written in expanded form with fractions? 8 Applying what we know about Place Value
Now that we know what value is and can determine the value of a digit we are ready to move to the next part of our learning target. We are going to work on telling how much smaller or larger a digit is when moved to a different place value. We are going to look at some models and compare what is happening each time. Then, we will apply those concepts to numbers. If the pink gorilla eats watermelon every night, how much watermelons does he eat? © One Stop Teacher Shop

9 Let’s Recap Can the whole change? What happens when you move to the right? What happens when you move to the left?

10 The Value of a Digit The 1 furthest to the left is greater than the 1 furthest to the right. How do they compare? 22 You Watch Me 2.2 3,595.27 The value of the first two is ______
The value of the second two is ________ The 2 in the ones place is ________ times the 2 in the tenths place. 3,595.27 Determine how much larger or smaller the 5 with the smaller value is than the 5 with the larger value. ________ is __________ times as great as _________. 23 You Help Me 63.38 1) Determine how much larger or smaller the digit 3 is in the ones place than the tenths place. 771.72 1) Determine how much larger or smaller the digit 7 in the tenths place is compared to the digit 7 in the tens place. 2) Determine how much larger or smaller the digit 7 in the hundreds place is compared to the digit 7 in the tens place. 494.66 1) What is the value of the tenths digit? 2) What is the value of the hundredths digit? 3) The value of the 6 in the tenths place is ________ the value of the 6 in the hundredths place. 4) Compare the digit 4 with the smaller value to the digit 4 with the greater value. USE THIS TO HELP IF YOU NEED IT: in the __________ place is ___________ times as great as the digit 4 in the ___________ place. 25 Try a Few on Your Own 1) 74,533.18 30 is __________ times as great as 3. 2) The 4 in the thousandths place is ________ times as great as 4 in the hundredths place. 3) is __________ times as great as 2. 4) is __________ times as great as 0.09. 26 Evaluate Me I was asked to determine how many times greater or smaller the digit 7 with the least value is compared to the digit 7 with the greatest value. 707.70 I knew the digit 7 with the least value is in the tenths place, and the digit 7 with the largest value is in the hundreds place. I know that each time the digit moves to the left it increases by a power of 10. I must take three hops to get from the tenths place to the hundreds place, so 10 x 10 x 10 = 1,000. This means that the 7 in the tenths place is 1/1,000 the value of the digit in the hundreds place. The tenths place is smaller than the hundreds place, so I can use a fraction.
