2018-19 MD FINANCIAL AID ENHANCEMENTS
Going forward, unit loans for entering and returning MD students will be set at $23,000, a decrease from the level of $29,000. This amount will remain constant for all present students including those accepted for admission in 2018, rather than increasing every year as in the past. 0 parent contribution from income will now be assessed at incomes of $125k and less, rather than $100k and less. Contributions for incomes from 125k-165k will be prorated.

LOWER BORROWING EXPECTATION
The unit loan is the amount students are expected to borrow towards their calculated need. In the past, this amount has increased $1,000 every academic year. In , this amount is $29,000. Beginning in , this borrowing expectation will decrease to $23,000. For students who qualify for need- based aid, the difference will be covered with YSM scholarship.

A family with $60k calculated financial need is eligible for $60k in financial aid. That aid would consist of: $29k unit loan $31k YSM scholarship $60k total financial aid With the new enhancements, a family with the same need would have a slightly different distribution of aid: $23k unit loan $37k YSM scholarship $60k total financial aid

A family whose total income is $100k or less is not assessed a parent contribution from income. They may still be expected to contribute from assets. Additional allowances are made for families whose incomes are between $100k- $140k. Beginning in the year, this threshold will be raised to $125k. The range for adjusted parent contributions will be raised to $125k-$165k.
