5. Qur’an
The word of God
A record of the revelations to Muhammad over a period of 22 years
Began in a cave outside Mecca in AD 610
Continued for the rest of his life until he died in AD 632
The Qur’an was compiled as a book in AD 651 , 19 years after Muhammad’s death

6. Qur’an continued…. Consists of 114 chapters made up of verses.
Verses discusses:
Nature of God
Creation
The human soul
Moral, legal, and family issues.
Much of the language is very poetic.

7. The Sunnah
Traditions of the prophet; the words and actions of Muhammad.
Guidelines for living a proper life.
Helps interpret parts of the Qur’an. (like a commentary)
The written version of the Sunnah is called the Hadith.
Example passage (DON’T COPY):
“ The one who eats his fill while his neighbor goes without food is not a believer. God does not look upon your bodies and appearances. He looks upon your hearts and your deeds.”
