The Girlguiding programme overview
This training session is an overview of the Girlguiding programme. It is to be used as an introduction to the programme, either on its own or at the start of a longer training session using other programme training modules. If you are training new leaders you will also need to cover other important aspects of the Girlguiding programme as you usually would, including the Five Essentials, the Promise etc. You are welcome to adapt the training session to suit your venue, requirements, learner needs and the context of your training, ensuring you’re retaining the key learning points. The accompanying training plan contains the key learning points and activities for each slide. In these PowerPoint trainer notes you will find background context and/or suggested delivery ideas to help you as a trainer as appropriate. Insert your name here! Today’s trainer: 1

Unit meeting activities
Suggested delivery ideas for trainers There are lots of creative ways that you can help leaders to remember what girls need to do to achieve a theme award. The card sort activity is one example, below is another example. You may have your own! Suggested ideas: get participants up and moving – give each participant an envelope with a part of a theme award in it (an interest badge, skills builder or unit meeting activity hours). Ask participants to find the other parts needed to make a theme award and to make a human chain representing the journey to achieving one! 9

Interest badges 12 Additional information for trainers
Girls can find out about the badges available to them in their badge or record books. Badge books: contains information about all the badges and awards available to a girl and how to achieve theme, as well as space to record her achievements. Rainbows, Brownies and Guides each have their own badge book. Ranger record book: contains space for Rangers to record their achievements and an overview of the badges and awards available to Rangers. The steps Rangers need to take to achieve their badges are available online for the girls. This decision was made following extensive consultation with the girls who wanted the information available online. It also makes the record book more cost effective at a stage when girls frequently start purchasing their own resources. 12

Beyond the programme 16

This is just the beginning…
This training session is just an overview of the Girlguiding programme. There is lots more to discover! Your challenge… What will you do next? How will you find out more? 17

Moment of reflection 18 Suggested delivery ideas for trainers
This is a moment for participants to pause and consider all they’ve heard and discussed during the training. Below are a list of questions that may help participants to reflect: Write three new things you learnt. What was the main surprise? What will you implement first? What is next for you? Write it down or tell the person next to you? Write a postcard to yourself with the three key things you learnt. Take a photo of your favourite activity or resource Tweet #EveryGirl what you’ve learnt Share on your local Facebook page your excitement of what you’ve learnt Think what you would say to another leader about this module. 18
