2. After WW II the Soviet Union attempted to spread their communists beliefs to other countries
The United States was determined to try and stop them

The Iron Curtain was the invisible line that divided Communist Eastern Europe from the more democratic Western Europe
The term was first used by Winston Churchill
People who lived in Communist countries had very little personal freedom and very limited economic opportunities

After WW II the Soviet Union was allowed to take charge of certain countries, where they quickly put communist based governments in place
People in the US felt their way of life was under attack from Communism

5. Berlin Airlift
After Germany was defeated in WW II, Germany was divided into four zones, one being controlled by the Soviets
In 1948 the Soviets blocked all roads and railways into Berlin, Germany in an attempt to control the whole city
To prevent the people from starving, the US flew nonstop airdrops of food and other supplies into Berlin

The Soviets eventually lifted the blockade

7. Korean War
The northern part of Korea was controlled by Communist China, the southern part by a democratic government
Backed by the Soviets and China, North Korea invaded the South
The US and the UN, backed South Korea to prevent the spread of communism
Neither side really won, and Korea is still divided today

8. North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)
To support each other after WW II the Allies founded NATO
If one member is threatened, the others offer diplomatic support, and then military support if needed
NATO is still active today, but was used as a way to prevent the spread of communism during the Cold War

He held trials often accusing innocent people
He ruined many lives through inaccurate or untrue allegations
Americans supported his actions for a long time because they were so afraid of Communists taking over the world
