Truman Doctrine the U.S. would support Greece and Turkey with economic and military aid to prevent them from falling into the Soviet sphere. Truman says: "I believe that it must be the policy of the United States to support free peoples who are resisting attempted subjugation by armed minorities or by outside pressures. I believe that we must assist free peoples to work out their own destinies in their own way. I believe that our help should be primarily through economic and financial aid which is essential to economic stability and orderly political processes."

Why is it an indirect conflict?
power of nuclear weapons deterrence (disarmament) M.A.D. (mutually assured destruction) - if attacked a nation would respond with the same or greater force - threat of using weapons against the enemy prevents the enemy from using their weapons - result would be complete annihilation

Containment Containment was a United States policy using military, economic, and diplomatic strategies to stall the spread of communism, enhance America’s security and influence abroad, and prevent a "domino effect".
