6 Yalta Conference, 1945 The physical structure of the Cold War was put into place at the end of World War II. Churchill, Roosevelt, and Stalin agreed in February of 1945 at Yalta to divide Germany into four occupation zones.

10 Truman Doctrine the U.S. would support Greece and Turkey with economic and military aid to prevent them from falling into the Soviet sphere. Truman says: "I believe that it must be the policy of the United States to support free peoples who are resisting attempted subjugation by armed minorities or by outside pressures. I believe that we must assist free peoples to work out their own destinies in their own way. I believe that our help should be primarily through economic and financial aid which is essential to economic stability and orderly political processes."

power of nuclear weapons deterrence (disarmament) M.A.D. (mutually assured destruction) - if attacked a nation would respond with the same or greater force - threat of using weapons against the enemy prevents the enemy from using their weapons - result would be complete annihilation

19 Containment Containment was a United States policy using military, economic, and diplomatic strategies to stall the spread of communism, enhance America’s security and influence abroad, and prevent a "domino effect".

20 Domino Theory If one state turned communist, neighbouring countries were likely to turn communist as well used to justify American intervention and involvement in world affairs

21 Arms Race A competition between nations for superiority in the development and accumulation of weapons, especially between the U.S. and the former USSR during the Cold War.

22 Space Race Between 1957 and 1975,the two nations focused on attaining firsts in space exploration, which were seen as necessary for national security and symbolic of technological and ideological superiority.
