When Time Stood Still

Pompeii Pompeii was a prosperous Roman town in the south of Italy. Known as a resort town, the wealthy and powerful of Rome would often vacation there. Unfortunately, it was built at the base of a dormant volcano. In A.D. 79 the volcano woke up…

The explosion of the volcano covered the town of Pompeii in ash and rock. It remained covered for about 1700 years. When it was rediscovered, historians found a lot of material culture ( buildings, tools, and other objects that shape how people live).

Jewelry, household items, and works of art found in the ruins of Pompeii give us insight into the daily life of Romans…

The eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 A. D
The eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 A.D. was a “PLINIAN ERUPTION”, named after Pliny the Younger, who recorded the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in a letter. This type of eruption is also referred to as a Vesuvian eruption. Plinian/Vesuvian eruptions are very explosive and dangerous with columns of gas and volcanic ash extending into the stratosphere!

Mammoth Mountain is actually a volcano
Mammoth Mountain is actually a volcano. It has been dormant for a very long time. However, it does still emit gases and has had some minor eruptions in the last 250 years. Hopefully, history won’t repeat itself.

Homework for tonight Write a journal entry describing what it would be like to live through a volcanic eruption near your home. At least 10 sentences.

Let’s Annotate! As we already mentioned, the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 A.D. was a “PLINIAN ERUPTION”, named after Pliny the Younger, who recorded the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in a letter where he described how the eruption took the life of his uncle, Pliny the Elder. We will read Pliny the Youngers letters and make notes on them.
