Volcanoes By Bryce Page

Introduction I am doing my project on Volcanoes. I picked volcanoes because they look cool from above. There are volcanoes all over the world. They help form land but they also destroy nature.

Description A volcano is like a mountain that has a opening on top. Inside is a pool of molten rock. When the pressure builds up the molten rock shots up through the opening and spills out lava. An eruption can last one day to thousands years. A volcano is measured by the Volcanic Explosivity Index. This determines how big a volcano is.

Causes The earth's crust is made up of plates that fit together like a puzzle. When these plates move it can cause earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Eruptions can cause lava flows, hot ash flows, mud slides, and avalanches. Volcanoes can create tsunamis, flash floods, and rockfalls.

Location Volcanoes are located on the earth’s plate boundaries. The Ring of Fire is a chain of volcanoes that surround the Pacific Ocean. There are also volcanoes in the United States. There are three active volcanoes in Hawaii, and there is a mountain in Missouri called the Taum Sauk Mountain that was created by volcanic activity many years ago. There are volcanoes all over the world and 1500 are still active.

Effects on people and Damage
Some bad ways that volcanoes can affect people are that ash can cover house and roads and can make it hard to breathe. Lava can also run over houses and roads. Also they can produce a poisonous gas. One good effect of a volcano is the ash can make rich soil for farming.

Scientists Vulcanologist is some one how study's volcanoes. They use tools that detect and record earthquakes, Volcanic gases, and how much lava is moving underground.

History The deadliest volcano ever was Mount Tambora in Indonesia in It killed 100,000 people and was the largest eruption ever. It was so big the sun was not seen for several days. Flying debris that fell into the ocean caused a tsunami. It also affected the climate through the world.
