A 2012 national poll of voters revealed nearly three in four voters (73%) support increasing the minimum wage to $10. In 2008, then-presidential candidate Barack Obama pledged to raise the minimum wage to $9.50 by 2011.

Thousands of low-paid workers and their supporters marched in 190 cities across the nation December 4, calling for $15 an hour. This marked the second year of the campaign. Protests, primarily focusing on fast-food and retail chains, were held in 35 states. Many cities involved in the "fight for $15 campaign" saw their first fast-food strikes. Currently the hourly minimum is $7.25. A bill backed by President Obama to raise it to $10.10 by late 2016 is stalled in Congress.

Though Republicans in Congress continue to block the President's proposal, many state legislatures and governors, mayors and city councils, and business owners have answered the President's call and raised wages for their residents and employees.
6
Measures that were aimed at raising the minimum wage were overwhelmingly supported in Alaska, Arkansas, Nebraska, and South Dakota where they appeared on ballots in November These measures will increase each state’s minimum wage by $1.25 or more within the next three years.
7
Members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus are pressing Obama to use an executive order to increase the minimum wage for federal contract workers to $15.
