External Organs: Vulva – external female reproductive organs consisting of the mons pubic, labia minora, labia majora, vaginal opening, and clitoris

Internal Organs: Ovaries – Produce female sex cells – Produce female sex hormones – Fallopian Tubes – female sex glands ovum (egg) progesterone estrogen tubes that extend from each ovary to the uterus; site of fertilization

Internal Organs: Uterus – Cervix – Vagina – holds and nourishes a fetus neck of the uterus; keeps fetus in uterus elastic, muscle-lines tube; birth canal 3-4 inches long (avg)

The Menstrual Cycle Stages of the Menstrual cycle (avg. 28 day cycle) Stage 1 (days 1-4) Menstruation – release of the endometrium (uterine lining) Stage 2 (days 5-13) uterine lining is thing and the hormone FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone) stimulates egg to mature in an ovary Stage 3 (day 14/15) Ovulation – release of the egg into a fallopian tube; happens mid-cycle; a woman is MOST fertile at the time of ovulation
