Health Education within the Curriculum for Excellence
Health and Wellbeing Second Level Learning Outcomes: I recognise that how my body changes can affect how I feel about myself and how I may behave. I can describe the physical changes during puberty, understand why they are taking place and the importance of personal hygiene.

Living and Growing Topic P6
Guideline for lesson format: ‘Changes’ – explores the physical and emotional changes that take place at the onset of puberty, and how we feel about ourselves. ‘Girl Talk/Boy Talk’ – reviews the physical and emotional changes that take place for girls/boys at the onset of puberty, e.g. menstruation/periods, hormones, the importance of personal hygiene, etc. Our school nurse, Jackie, will come into school to lead sessions for girls only then boys only linked to these class lessons.

‘How Babies Are Made’ – examines the whole process of life cycles and reproduction, rites of passage, friendships and feelings. ‘Let’s Talk About Sex’ – examines the development of relationships, the images of sex created by the media and popular culture, and marriage. ‘How Babies Are Born’ – Reviews relationships and feelings, and investigates roles and responsibilities.

Question Box Questions that fall within the fence will be answered at discussion sessions If a question isn’t answered it is outside the fence and can be asked at home, with parents deciding if it is appropriate to their child’s stage of development.
