HW: “How the Nervous System Works” reading and questions
HW: “How the Nervous System Works” reading and questions. Sherlock #25-end due Friday. Do Now: 1/17/17 Listen carefully to the part of the story that is about to be read to you. How does this relate to the body system we will be learning next?
2
Scientific Sherlock Observations # 21-24
3
The Nervous System I. Function of the Nervous System: A. Receives and sends information throughout the body B. Also, it interprets and responds to changes in the environment Brrrrr I’m feeling cold
4
The Nervous System Stimulus: a signal to which an organism reacts
Ex. Scary movie scene Response: action or movement of an organism brought on by a stimulus Ex. Screaming
5
A. Specialized cell that carries messages (impulse)
II. The Neuron: A. Specialized cell that carries messages (impulse) /tip B. Messages are carried from dendrites to axon terminal in ONE DIRECTION ONLY!
6
Yes, she said in “One Direction!”
7
Neuron Model The simplest “model” of a neuron is your hand.

III. Three Types of Neurons (SIM)
A. Sensory: Detects the stimulus and sends a message Found in sensory organs (ex: eye, skin, nose) B. Interneuron: Interprets message from sensory neurons Found in the Spinal cord and Brain C. Motor: Carries the message to respond to the stimulus Found in muscles or glands
