STEAM Overview Definition
STEAM Education is an interdisciplinary approach which focuses on science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics while integrating rigorous academic concepts to solve real-world problems
5
STEAM Overview Mission
Lodi Unified School District Community promotes the integration of STEAM practices to establish an innovative, problem-solving culture. Vision Create innovators and problem solvers
6
STEAM Overview Goals GOAL #1: Develop and use STEAM practices to create innovators and problem solvers GOAL #2: Increase STEAM elective course offerings (with focus on tech & engineering) GOAL #3: Increase STEAM experiences through field and extracurricular experiences

10
STEAM Overview GOALS for Student Transitions
Create a transition for students that will Build sufficient transferrable skills for school, college, and career Streamline options for students Bring consistency amongst the middle schools and the high school
11
STEAM Overview STEAM COURSE DESCRIPTION
(this can be used to guide lesson/activity planning) STEAM courses will utilize the engineering design process in a collaborative setting to solve real world problems and incorporate various components of the math, science, and ELA practices.
12
STEAM Overview Engineering Design Process Define the problem
Do background research Specify requirements Brainstorm, evaluate, and choose solution Develop and prototype solution Test solution Communicate Results Retest/redesign as needed and communicate new results
13
STEAM Overview The example on the next slide suggests how the math, science, and ELA practices can be addressed within the engineering design process; however, not all practices will be addressed in all lessons. From the example you can see how STEAM curriculum will lead to interdisciplinary lessons, projects, or activities.
14
STEAM Overview Science Math ELA
Asking questions (for science) and defining problems (for engineering) Developing and using models Planning and carrying out investigations Analyzing and interpreting data Using mathematics and computational thinking Constructing explanations (for science) and designing solutions (for engineering) Engaging in argument from evidence Obtaining, evaluating, and communicating information Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them Reason abstractly and quantitatively Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others Model with mathematics Use appropriate tools strategically Attend to precision Look for and make use of structure Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning They demonstrate independence. They build strong content knowledge. Obtain, synthesize, and report findings clearly and effectively in response to task and purpose They comprehend as well as critique. Read, write and speak grounded in evidence. They use technology and digital media strategically and capably. They come to understanding other perspectives and cultures.

NEXT STEPS Create a Lodi USD STEAM PLC that includes all STEAM teachers and allows them to meet once a quarter to collaborate about courses they teach and create transitions for students. Finalize the STEAM course description so that it can be added to the course catalog Identify all courses offered by Lodi USD that meet the STEAM course description and mark them as so in the catalog
