OPENING We have some silent reading time…

4 ANNOUNCEMENTS Homework: Due Oct. 27th—all four of your research articles. Today we will research in the library, so it is the perfect time to find and print off your articles. Do you want an “A” on this project? Then you should find five or more articles!

5 TOPICS Now is the time to pick your research topics.
Put your name on a scrap sheet of paper to do a drawing. When I pick your name, you can pick your topic. Only one person per topic. Refer your topic list sheet if needed.

6 REVIEW Remember, PART ONE “The Annotated Bibliography) is going to be a list of research you have found on your topic. It will be 4 or so articles and resources you will find in the library or on the internet. Today, I will help you find these articles for PART ONE

7 INTRODUCTION After viewing this powerpoint, you should be able to do the following… I. I will be able to identify what valid research is (from invalid research). 2. I will be able to identify where and how to research on the web. 3. I will be able to print off 2-4 articles for my research project.

8 VALID RESEARCH There are four places you can find valid research for this project… 1. MEL.org—online database. 2. Newspapers 3. Thoughtful Online Researching. 4. Library

9 1. What is valid research? These are the valid places you can research online…please record them on your notes sheet. Mel.org (online databases) Well known news sites (like CNN, NBC news, Battle Creek Enquirer) Google News The Library .ORG or .GOV sites (most of the time, but not always)

10 1. What is invalid research?
These are the invalid places you can research online…please record them on your notes sheet. Wikipedia (even though yes, it is a “.org” site) Basic Google Searches Many .com sites (but not all .com are bad!) Answers.com, About.com, etc.

11 1. What is valid research? To verify “valid” resources, consider the following… 1. Does it have an author (first and last name)? 2. Does it have a copyright/publishing date? 3. It is sponsored by an organization that is well know? (Like PETA, or the National Cancer Association) 4. Does it look “legit?” –meaning, does it have proper grammar, good graphics, etc.

12 REFLECTION Now is the time to quickly reflect on your first goal…
I. I will be able to identify what valid research is (from invalid research).

13 2A. Where can I search? The best place to start searching is MEL.ORG.
Mel.org is basically an online library with lots of valid databases with TONS of valid articles and resources. To get to the Mel.org databases: 1. Type in “Mel.org” in your browser. 2. Scroll down and look for the “TEENS” gateway on the left hand side of the screen. 3. Explore the different databases!

14 HELPFUL VISUAL Pick “TEENS” under the Mel Subject Gateways!

15 2B. How do I search? Some of the best databases are:
General One File Gale Virtual Reference Library GOLD Academic One File Ebook Collection (Ebook Source) Do a “subject guide search!!!!!!” This will give you “subdivisions” and help you narrow down the best articles!

16 HELPFUL VISUAL The “Teens Gateway” will give a great list of databases appropriate to your age level… Pick one of the blue links to access the databases…

17 See here! HELPFUL VISUAL Remember, do a “SUBJECT GUIDE SEARCH,” not a regular keyword search! Click “SUBJECT GUIDE SEARCH” in the header…

18 HELPFUL VISUAL See here! The “subject guide search” will take you to a page with “SUBDIVISIONS” –click that for your articles!

19 HELPFUL VISUAL See here! Clicking on “SUBDIVISION” will help organize your articles into better categories…pick and choose what categories to find the best articles!

20 2C. Now what? As you explore the different databases , search results, and articles, pick the best articles and print them off! You will need at least 4 articles total for PART 1. I would recommend printing 5-6 just in case and to score an A.

21 REFLECTION Now is the time to quickly reflect on your second goal…
2. I will be able to identify where and how to research on the web.

22 3. Workshop and articles Now the rest of the hour is dedicated to you finding articles and research to print off. You can: explore Mel.org, do thoughtful Google searches, explore news websites, etc. Before the end of the block, you need to print 2-4 articles off. Just print them!

23 CLOSING Now is the time to quickly reflect on your third and final goal. 3. I will be able to print off 2-4 topics for my research project. How many did you find???
