1 Title of notes: Soil erosion on page 10 right side
Bell work – 5 minutes What is one difference you observed in the soil samples? Planner: soil erosion Check the calendar! Title of notes: Soil erosion on page 10 right side

2 I’ll know I’ve got it when…
Learning target I can describe what erosion is and how it’s caused. Today I am… learning about the effects of different kinds of erosion. So that I’ll be able to… understand how human and natural activities impact the land. I’ll know I’ve got it when… I can write 1-2 sentences describing what erosion is and how it is caused.

3 Surface runoff clog our culverts, flood channels and streams.
Why study erosion? The loss of soil results in loss of topsoil, minerals, nutrients, and it causes cuts in the landscape. Surface runoff clog our culverts, flood channels and streams. Sometimes it destroys wildlife and damages recreational areas such as lakes and reservoirs.

4 The processes that break down rocks/ minerals into smaller particles.
Weathering The processes that break down rocks/ minerals into smaller particles.

5 The natural break up of rock without a chemical change.
Physical weathering The natural break up of rock without a chemical change.

6 Causes of physical weathering
wind rain ice heat / cold

7 When water/other substances chemically break down rocks.
Chemical weathering When water/other substances chemically break down rocks.

8 Causes of chemical weathering
Oxidation (oxygen dissolved in water combines with metallic elements). Hydrolysis (when water and rocks and minerals meet). Hydration (materials absorb the water and then create a new product).

9 Erosion The process in which earth is worn away by human activities or natural acts.

10 Soil erosion The removal of topsoil faster than the soil forming processes can replace it, due to natural, animal, and human activity.

11 Water Wind Glacial Sea Soil
Types of erosion Water Wind Glacial Sea Soil

12 Good vs. bad: Soil erosion
Negatives Removes topsoil. Can lead to flooding. Positives - Can produce rich/productive soils.

13 Erosion video 9:36

14 Desertification When fertile land becomes a desert.

15 Soil degradation The break down of soil characteristics needed for plant growth or other ecosystem services.

16 Reading pages pgs Write 2 facts from the reading. Bullet point the facts and get a stamp.

17 Soil erosion left side of page 10
Create a comic strip about soil erosion. You comic strip should include 4 different slides with pictures and writing on each of the slides. It could be humorous or serious.
