Future jobs? What jobs will be secure?
What jobs will be in demand in ten years? Where will the jobs be? Here are a few questions which you may get asked by customers. We can’t predict what will happen with the labour market using a crystal ball however we can have a bit of an idea through key themes that we know are influencing the labour market Takes a long time for things to happen….
13
Ageing population Ageing population is the first of these themes. We know that it is happening and we can have an educated guess as to how it may affect the labour market. Some of the reasons the population is ageing include People are having less children and living longer, Baby boomers – reaching retirement
14
Ageing population- implications for the labour market
People are working longer Greater social care and health resources required to look after the elderly More people staying at home for longer rather than going into establishments such as nursing homes People retiring – leaves a skills gap Special knowledge and skills associated with age-related ill-health and disabilities, such as dealing with dementia, visual and/or auditory impairment Providing services for people in retirement The fact that we have an ageing population is something that is impacting on the labour market today and will continue to do so These statistics show just how big this issue is! Increase in state pension age – people working longer Design of built environment – accessible Occupational Therapists to support elderly e.g. stairlifts

Digital and Technology
Changes in technology are also influencing the labour market.
17
New Technologies As technologies develop, there are changes in the type of work
While jobs in some areas disappear- new jobs appear Cyber Security There are 1.5 million cyber crime victims each day (GCHQ) On average, there were just under 7,000 advertised positions for Cyber Security positions posted in the UK throughout the last year an increase of 18% on the previous year and 103% on the level five years earlier. (The Techpartnership) Roles related include: Cyber Security Analyst; Capability Developer & Technical Analyst

Environmental Issues Influenced by governmental policies e.g. ban on all new petrol and diesel cars by 2040 Changes will affect jobs at a number of levels e.g. maintenance, construction, manufacturing and installation of new technologies Environmental issues are another key theme changing the labour market. This is quite often influenced by government policy. Nissan note production. Often learn new skills rather than whole new careers eg clean room technologies. Not only do we have to make things more energy efficient for the benefit of the planet, to prevent global warming – we also have limited ammounts of fossil fuels remaining meaning that we need to find new ways of power.
