2 “A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner
Published in April 1930 Set in fictional Jefferson, Mississippi What is the historical context of Mississippi in the 1930s? What implications might that have for the text?

3 While Reading Put on your critical lenses! - Feminist/Gender Lens - Marxist Lens - Psychological Lens

4 After Reading Choose the perspective you think offers the best analysis of the story. Write a critical analysis through your chosen lens. How does this story reflect change in America? Creative Writing! Don’t forget: “Dear Smithsonian” Rough Drafts are due by the end of the day!

5 Wednesday 5/9 What is the meaning of the word “taboo”?
Think of some examples of things that are “taboo” either in American culture or in other cultures.

6 Taboo! For this activity, you will need to work with a partner to write a script. The script will feature dialogue between two people: you and your partner. There are some limitations: You cannot use any of the “taboo” words on the paper you receive. You must speak in coded language, where you discuss your topic without specifically mentioning what the topic is. Your conversation topic should be difficult to figure out for an eavesdropper. Be prepared to act out your scenario. Do NOT share with anyone in the meantime.
