Why run this trip? To give students the opportunity to put learning into practice Developing geographical skills and knowledge about coastlines and water management Using language for real purposes To expose students to different cultures and customs To develop confidence in an unfamiliar situation

Where is Hellenthal?

Where is Hellenthal? Hellenthal (bright valley) is a small town (population of around 8,000) in Nord-Rhein Westfalen, not far from the Belgian border. It is part of a large dam network in the region and in the Eifel forest Historically, this area of Germany was important for iron and steel works

Wednesday 11th July 0545 Gather at Station Road, Sleaford
0600 Coaches depart for Folkestone 1250 Shuttle to Calais (eat packed lunch) 1425 Arrive Calais 1700 Stop in Brussels to visit the European Parliament Hemicycle 2100 Arrive at accommodation for late dinner and check-in 2200 Bed time

Thursday 12th July 0800 Breakfast in DJH Hellenthal
0900 Morning activities with Betreuer 1230 Lunch (packed) 1330 Afternoon activities with Betreuer 1730 Dinner at DJH Hellenthal 1900 Evening activities with Betreuer 2130 Bed time

Friday 13th July 0730 Breakfast in DJH Hellenthal
0830 Depart DJH Hellenthal for morning activities which include town survey and visit to Oleftalsperre 1230 Lunch (packed) 1330 Walk to Greifvogelstation- Wildfreigehege – visit to include flight demonstration and train tour of wildlife park 1800 Dinner at Zum Adler Restaurant in Wildlife Park (pre-order in German lesson) Return to DJH Hellenthal 2130 Bed time

Saturday 14th July 0600 Breakfast in DJH Hellenthal
0700 Depart from DJH Hellenthal to Calais via Northern Belgian coastline (eat packed lunch) 1420/1436 Shuttle to Folkestone 1355/1411 Arrive Folkestone 1900 Coach arrives in Station Road, Sleaford (please don’t park in the bus lane)

Further travel insurance to the EHIC and school educational visit insurance Risk assessments – risks and control measures; part of language / geography learning (available for inspection at request) Loco parentis – entrusted to our care; like in school but for the whole journey

Generic CoC Students listen to all instructions carefully
Students stay with their allocated group Students respect others around them Students observe timings to avoid lateness No alcohol or tobacco to be purchased Ensure Mr Rooke’s phone number is programmed into your mobile (and delete on return!) Keep emergency card with you at all times

Coach CoC Always wear a seat belt Rubbish must be put in a bin
Respect the decisions made by staff If you feel unwell, inform a member of staff

Hostel CoC Only go into the room you are allocated
Keep doors closed / lockers locked at all times Keep keys safe No running around corridors At ‘bed time’, be quiet in your room Respect others Listen to instructions carefully Follow procedures for meal times In case of emergency, follow procedures (know where your group leader is) Leave room how you found it

Walking CoC Listen to instructions carefully
Stay with your allocated group and teacher – exchange numbers Cross roads at pedestrian crossings only – wait for the green light Look left first – traffic drives on the other side of the road – jaywalking is punishable with an on the spot fine of €20 If given free time, stay in groups of 4 from your teacher group Know where meeting points are and be on time

Be courteous – public places Know where meeting points are and when Stay in groups of 4 from your teacher group Follow the specific instructions from the guides at the Dam / Betreuer / Flight demonstrators

Clothing & packing Appropriate for summer (check the forecast) – sunglasses and sun lotion Good footwear (not new!) Layers for different activities (dam can be 10C) Waterproof coat Small suitcase – we’re away 4 days! European charger converter (roaming for mobile) Medication as stated on VIS 13 clearly labelled (insect repellent; antihistamine; anthisan) Passport and EHIC card to school by 2nd July in a labelled envelope Towels need to be brought!

Plugs have no off-switch Fire detectors go off with too much spray

Pocket money All activities are paid for
Meals are provided except lunch on outward journey and dinner on return journey Maximum spending money of €50 and £20 in cash

Emergency procedures Emergency contact list held in school and by Mr Rooke Tell a member of staff Follow instructions from staff carefully, quickly and silently

What to do now Ensure Mr Rooke has the completed EV13 and any additional medical or dietary information needed Take away the information leaflet Send passport and EHIC to school on 2/7 in a labelled envelope Ask any questions you have
