John’s Introduction “Elder” can mean old, or it can refer to a position in the church John’s readers know him personally The “Chosen Lady” is either a woman or a church

Loving Others in the Truth
We are to show love for everyone who believes the truth about Jesus Christ God gives us Grace, Mercy, and Peace Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life (Jn. 14:6) God is Love (I Jn. 4:8, 16)

Walking in the Truth John’s readers are living their lives in a way that is pleasing to God They are living our their faith; not just talking about it John gives them an “old” command – Love one another

I John 2:7 “Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had from the beginning.”

I John 3:11 “This is the message you heard from the beginning: We should love one another.”

Jesus Said… “If you love me, you will obey what I command.” (Jn. 14:15) “My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.” (Jn. 15:12)

I John 2:22 “Who is the liar? It is the man who denies that Jesus is the Christ. Such a man is the antichrist – he denies the Father and the Son.”

I John 4:2-3 “This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every Spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.”

I Peter 3:18 “Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God.”

Hebrews 10:10 “We have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.”

Ephesians 2:8-9 “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast.”

I Corinthians 3:14-15 “If what he has built survives, he will receive his reward. If it is burned up, he will suffer loss; he himself will be saved, but only as one escaping through the flames.”

Dealing with A False Teacher
