5 OVERVIEW “The Bible reveals that there is anarchy somewhere, real thorough-going anarchy in the heart of men against God; therefore the need is strong that something should come into us from the outside to readjust us, to reconcile us, to turn us round, to put us right with God. The doctrine of the Atonement is the explanation of how God does that.” ~ Oswald Chambers

6 INTRODUCTION Like stalagmites, salvation always begins from above. Grace doesn’t rise; it falls. Atoning blood for our sin is provided from above. There is nothing we can do to rise up from the ground and stretch our way to God.

7 God requires a special sacrifice (Genesis 22:1-6).
God made a covenant with Abraham (Genesis 12, 15). Throughout the pages of Scripture we see that God is not only a promise-maker; He is a promise-keeper! God’s command seemed to jeopardize His promise (Genesis 22:1- 6). Abraham responded in obedience and faith to God’s requirement for a special sacrifice.

8 Atonement must come from above (Genesis 22:7-14).
“Where is the lamb?” summarizes the entirety of the Old Testament. Humanity could not offer this sacrifice; we are sinful. Instead, the atoning sacrifice had to come from above. Abraham did not trust himself to obey; he trusted God to provide. In love, God gave His Son and provided atonement from above.

9 Faith is trusting in God’s provision (Hebrews 11:17-19).
“By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac; and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, of whom it was said that ‘in Isaac shall thy seed be called,’ accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure.”

10 Faith is trusting in God’s provision (Hebrews 11:17-19).
Biblical faith is all about trusting in God’s provision and promise. “Having faith does not mean never having doubts or questions. It does mean remaining obedient.” ~ John Ortberg

11 CONCLUSION Remember, grace comes from above.
God is the One who bends down to earth when we cannot raise ourselves to heaven. God is the One who brings humanity to a point of intimate contact with divinity.
