1
The Water Cycle The continual movement of water from the oceans to the atmosphere to the land and back again.
2
The Water Cycle
3
The Water cycle: Causes weather Determines climate
provides freshwater Causes weather Determines climate Is powered by the sun never ends Can be slow or quick Regulates Earth’s temperatures
4
Important facts… Water molecules gain and lose energy as they move through the cycle. This helps control Earth’s temperatures.
5
The amount of water that evaporates is equal to the amount that precipitates.
The amount of water on Earth never changes!!!!!
6
Most rain evaporates and precipitates in the oceans simply because they are large.
7
Wind pushes, or transports, clouds towards the land so it will get rain.
8
In General… Water on the ground, absorbs heat energy from the sun and EVAPORATES (changes from a liquid to a gas)
9
Water also evaporates from plants. This is called TRANSPIRATION
10
The rising water cools, releasing heat into the air, & CONDENSES (changes back into a liquid) and forms clouds
11
The cloud drops grow until they are heavy & PRECIPITATE as rain, sleet, snow, or hail
12
Rain water travels downhill, RUNOFF, or underground, GROUNDWATER
Rain water travels downhill, RUNOFF, or underground, GROUNDWATER. It ACCUMULATES or collects in lakes, rivers, oceans, or soil
