In The Canterbury Tales, Geoffrey Chaucer wrote about the people he had met during his life.

People of all classes went on pilgrimages to holy sites to ask for help with medical, financial, or other problems.
A pilgrimage is defined as a journey, especially a long one, made to some sacred place as an act of religious devotion.
Therefore, a pilgrim is person who would take on such a trip.

9. So why did the pilgrims go to Canterbury?

Canterbury has always been an important religious center in England.
St. Augustine (seen in stained glass from the Canterbury Cathedral) was sent by Pope Gregory the Great to establish the Catholic faith in the country.
Religion played an important part in medieval life.

12. But what is so special about Canterbury in particular?
The city is the site of the Shrine of St. Thomas Becket.
A shrine is a sacred place often associated with saints.

13. About St. Thomas à Becket
Becket was a trusted adviser and friend of King Henry II. Henry named Becket Archbishop of Canterbury.
His outspoken criticism about the abuses of the church angered the king and Becket was murdered at the altar of Canterbury Cathedral.
The death of Becket angered the peasants who felt his Saxon heritage made him one of them.

14. Inside the cathedral..
Today a modern grouping of swords in the shape of a cross marks the site of Becket’s death in the cathedral.
