1 GENERAL EDUCATION COURSE-BASED ASSESSMENT – IT’S EASIER THAN YOU THINK!

2 OVERVIEW Teach the skills and knowledge that GVSU and society want our graduates to have Assess how well students learn it (every 3 years) Report the results and future plans (CAR) Revise the course

3 TEACH, ASSESS, REPORT, REVISE
Knowledge Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) (1-3) AND Skills SLOs (2 or 3, more if it double dips): Collaboration Critical Thinking Ethical Reasoning Information Literacy Integration Oral Communication Problem Solving Quantitative Literacy Written Communication

4 TEACH, ASSESS, REPORT, REVISE 1. Do you know the SLOs for your course?
DO NOW TEACH, ASSESS, REPORT, REVISE 1. Do you know the SLOs for your course? 2. Do you know the definition of SLOs? Click on the “Assessment” button.

5 TEACH, ASSESS, REPORT, REVISE 3. How will you teach the SLOs?

Assess = something you grade…but…you can’t use grades! (UAC) You can’t use a grade to assign a rating (3 is not an B) For example: In a Foundation course, a student may receive an A on an assignment but they may only receive a 2 for written communication Critical point → One measure (e.g., a paper) can be used to rate several SLOs but you must evaluate each SLO separately (students aren’t likely to have identical ratings on a skill and a knowledge SLO) for one assignment). Plan to do assessment over several weeks instead of all at once.

7 TEACH, ASSESS, REPORT, REVISE
You MUST use the GE rubric to assign assessment ratings (1-4) No pre- and post-test needed One measure of learning for each SLO Assess towards the end of the term We encourage you to share the assessment rubrics you have rated with students so they know where they need to focus their efforts.

8 TEACH, ASSESS, REPORT, REVISE
Skills Rubric (see the specific skill rubric for more information) Tree ring model - Students have multiple exposures to the Skills outcomes; therefore, we do not anticipate students receiving a Level 3 rating after a single course (but we do anticipate it by graduation). 4 = Exceeds: higher than Level 3 3 = Satisfies: the level we expect for graduating seniors 2 = Progressing: the level we expect students to reach after 1-2 exposures to a skill 1 = Baseline: the level we can expect for adequately prepared entering students 0 = Below baseline Blank = did not complete assignment, test, etc.

9 Rubric for a Skill SLO Student Ratings Objectives

10 A student – regardless of major – demonstrates:
TEACH, ASSESS, REPORT, REVISE Knowledge Rubric One exposure model: Students have only one or two exposures to the Knowledge outcomes; therefore, the goal is to achieve Level 3 after a single course. A student – regardless of major – demonstrates: 4=advanced understanding 3=basic understanding 2=substantial progress toward a basic understanding 1=very limited understanding 0=no understanding Blank=did not complete assignment, test, etc.

11 TEACH, ASSESS, REPORT, REVISE
DO NOW 4. How will you assess the SLOs? 5. Where do you log in to record ratings? Click on the “Assessment” button.

13 Export the spreadsheet or enter your data online

14 TEACH, ASSESS, REPORT, REVISE
Knowledge SLOs: These are broad (make sure the students see the forest for the trees). It is NOT the score on an exam or the course grade. Knowledge SLOs Enter a 1, 2, 3, 4 (or a blank if they did not submit,t or 0 if they are below 1) in every cell.

15 TEACH, ASSESS, REPORT, REVISE
Skills SLOs: Enter a rating for each objective for each SLO (there are 3 or 4 objectives for each SLO) Objectives Enter a 1, 2, 3, 4 (or a blank if they did not submit, or 0 if they are below 1) in every cell.

16 DO TOWARDS THE END OF THE SEMESTER 6. Enter assessment data online
TEACH, ASSESS, REPORT, REVISE DO TOWARDS THE END OF THE SEMESTER 6. Enter assessment data online Submit data by December 21. We’ll you tables and figures of your results. Click on the “Assessment” button.

17 Write 1 CAR – jointly – for all sections that collected data
TEACH, ASSESS, REPORT, REVISE In the CAR, report on what you learned and discuss how you plan to revise the course (teaching and/or assessing) Write 1 CAR – jointly – for all sections that collected data Submit the CAR by January 18. CAR to: 7. Complete the CAR (Course Assessment Report)

18 TEACH, ASSESS, REPORT, REVISE
Revise how you teach and/or assess the course based on what you learned and GEC’s feedback on your report !! Call if you have questions!!
