1 Grammar 2/12

2 “What’s happening in these sentences? What’s the word while doing?”
Now, let’s look at these sentences…. People sometimes think Charles is a country music fan while he’s actually deep into the Atlanta trap scene. While many people think Keonna is a criminal or a thug, she’s actually the best student at our school. “What’s happening in these sentences? What’s the word while doing?”

3 Now take a look at those sentences again
Now take a look at those sentences again. Do you see another word that appears in both of them?” People sometimes think Charles is a country music fan while he’s actually deep into the Atlanta trap scene. While many people think Keonna is a criminal or a thug, she’s actually the best student at our school.

4 Prompt: Think about some of the stereotypes people have about who you are based on how you look. What are some of things people believe about you that aren’t true? Write a paragraph that starts with the stereotypes people might have about you. Then, hit them with the actual truth about your identity. Try to use a turning word or phrase (like while, though, although, or even though). Also, see if you can use the word “actually” to emphasize the truth.

5 Example: “I’ve had to deal with stereotypes about me all my life. A lot of people assume things because of how I look or how I talk. I’ve had others who have literally wanted to stop talking to me because they didn’t like the way I spoke. It can be really frustrating raging against these stereotypes constantly. People often think I’m dumb because I have a Southern accent, even though I’m actually a professor.”
