The drama The Crucible by Arthur Miller uses the development of Tituba and Abigail Williams to explore the idea of punishment and reveal that is can befall the innocent. In Act One, it is clear that the character of Tituba is enforcing the idea of being wrongfully punished when Hale is interrogating her. Tituba cries out, “I don’t compact with no Devil!” but on the same page Putnam threatens her by saying, “This woman must be hanged! She must be taken and hanged!” (44). This makes it clear that even though Tituba didn’t do anything wrong, the community is going to harm her even in her innocence.
Another character that shows the idea of punishment befalling the innocent is Abigail Williams. In Act
