3 The Operating System Operating system - how a computer works at its most basic level To use programs like Word or Internet Explorer, we need to know the basics of how to use our computer in general. 11/12/2018 TechTuesdays

4 Basic tasks : Knowing the start menu
Changing system settings/utilities Logging on and using the network Managing your work Left vs. Right Click on your mouse Printing - adding and using Restarting and shutting down Closing a program or folder Using the search/find feature 11/12/2018 TechTuesdays

5 Clicking: Right or Left?
PC mice have two basic buttons: a left & right button. Macs have only one button! Left click - 90% of the time Left click - highlight, open, close, select, etc. Right click - gives you a basic menu of commands To select one of these commands, right click to open up the menu, the left click on the one you want. 11/12/2018 TechTuesdays

6 Printing Start>Settings>Printers to see what printers are installed Black check is next to one you currently default to (automatically uses that one) Right click for grey menu 11/12/2018 TechTuesdays

7 Printing Problems? Not printing but have paper in it? Right click and see if Use Printer Offline has a black check If so, left click on Use Printer Offline and will reconnect to start printing again! 11/12/2018 TechTuesdays

8 To add a printer... Start>Settings> Printer
Left click on Add a Printer Follow the instructions Note: if just bought printer, have Tech Staff help! 11/12/2018 TechTuesdays

9 Shutdown/Restart Don’t unplug or push power button to turn off computer everyday! Start>Shutdown then select from white box what you want to do. 11/12/2018 TechTuesdays

10 Closing stuff: Click the X in the top right corner or go to File> Exit to close a window, program, file, or folder. Can also usually push the keys ALT and F4 Important: Which of these 3 ways is the only way to exit First Class?? 11/12/2018 TechTuesdays

11 Looking for lost stuff:
Start>Search (or Find)>File or Folders Type in the title of what’s lost Need more help? See the table at the end of this slide show! 11/12/2018 TechTuesdays

12 Start Menu: Start menu - almost everything you need is here!
Take the time to click each of the icons/commands to find out what each does. You know most of these already! Hint: Type the first letter of the command instead of using the mouse. Faster!! 11/12/2018 TechTuesdays

13 System settings: Want louder sound, cooler screen saver, or faster mouse? Start>Settings>Control Panel and pick what you want to change! 11/12/2018 TechTuesdays

14 Utilities: Computers need to be maintained to work properly.
If you need help running disk defragmenter or running Norton AntiVirus on a floppy, see the table at the end of this slide show! 11/12/2018 TechTuesdays

15 Network: To print or back-up, you must log-on to the LCS network daily. Need more help? See the table at the end of this slide show! 11/12/2018 TechTuesdays
