2. MORE THAN 100 YEARS IN THE MAKING
Planned Parenthood was founded in Brooklyn New York as a birth control clinic in 1916; with the idea that women should have the information and care they need to have healthy lives.

3. THE WOMAN BEHIND IT ALL
Margaret Sanger and two other women, started the first clinic in Brooklyn, NY to educate women and provide birth control.
Soon the clinic was raided by police and Margaret and her colleagues were arrested.

4. Margaret ended up spending 30 days in prison because she refused to pay bail and instead shared her “birth control information” with fellow inmates.
In 1923, the two organizations that ultimately formed Planned Parenthood emerged. -- The Birth Control Clinical Research Bureau and American Birth Control League.

5. 1936: Court ruled birth control as no longer obscene and now legal in some states i.e. New York
1948: Planned Parenthood provided funding to research “The Pill” and in
1956: The first large trial happened in Puerto Rico.
THE 60’s:
The FDA approved birth control pills to be sold.
1965: Griswold vs. Connecticut - States cannot deny the sale of birth control to married couples
The trial in Puerto Rico was actually illegal and unsafe. Many women suffered terrible side effects from extreme levels of hormones. In addition most of the women were not aware of what the pill contained.

6. THE 70’s
1970: A public health act was passed which established sex education and family planning programs to be publically funded.
New York legalized abortion
Eisenstadt vs. Baird - Anyone, single or married has access to birth control.
1973: Roe vs. Wade legalized abortion in the U.S within the first 3 mo. of pregnancy
Federal and Public funding was cut off of abortion services.
1978: Faye Waddleton (34yr) is appointed the President of Planned Parenthood.
1979: A National program for sex education is established.

7. THE 90’s
1992: The U.S. Supreme Court acknowledges a woman’s right to abortion, but allows states to regulate abortion.
Reverend Tom Davis, organized a clergy across the country to create a theological defense of, and advocate for Planned Parenthood’s work.
1999: The FDA approves the first progestin-only emergency contraceptive available in the U.S., known as Plan B.
THE 80’s
The “Global Gag Rule,” prevents any international organization that receives financial aid from the U.S. from providing abortion services.
Planned Parenthood facilities around the country become targets of violence.

8. THE 2000’s
2000: The FDA approves RU-486, also known as the “abortion pill.”
The Obama administration ensures that health insurance plans cover all types of FDA-approved contraceptives.
The FDA approves “Plan B One-Step” emergency contraception for use without a prescription
