1 toad Animal Adaptations

2 Animals have certain adaptations that help them to survive.
Have you ever wondered how animals are able to survive in the wild? Animals have certain adaptations that help them to survive.

3 You don’t wear your shorts and bathing suit when it’s snowing outside!
Think about the way you dress in the winter. You don’t wear your shorts and bathing suit when it’s snowing outside! You wear warm clothes, and maybe even a hat and mittens to protect yourself from the weather.

4 And what if you are having a snowball fight?
You probably run away from the person throwing at you, and maybe even try to sneak up on that person and throw some snowballs!

5 The way you dress in the winter, as well as the way that you run and hide from someone throwing snow at you are kinds of … Adaptations.

6 We can separate adaptations into two categories:
Physical AND Behavioral

7 Physical adaptations help an animal survive in its environment.
are body structures that allow an animal to find and consume food, defend itself, and to reproduce its species. Hey! I’m a walking stick. I look just like a stick you’d find on the ground. Physical adaptations help an animal survive in its environment. © A. Weinberg

8 Camouflage (use of color in a surrounding)
Physical adaptation Camouflage (use of color in a surrounding) The chameleon can change its color to match its surroundings. Can you do that?

9 (looking or sounding like another living organism)
Physical adaptation Mimicry (looking or sounding like another living organism) The Viceroy butterfly uses mimicry to look like the Monarch butterfly. Can you tell them apart? I’m the Viceroy! Not poisonous Poisonous I’m the Monarch!

10 Chemical defenses (like venom, ink, sprays)
Physical adaptation Chemical defenses (like venom, ink, sprays)

11 Types of Structural Adaptations
Bent hind legs – prey run fast to escape & predators run fast to catch prey Used for: protection, locomotion

12 Types of Structural Adaptations
Body Structures Predator – Eyes facing forward to find prey.

13 Physical adaptations Body coverings & parts (claws, beaks, feet, armor plates, skulls, teeth) The elephant’s trunk is a physical adaptation that helps it to clean itself, eat, drink, and to pick things up.

15 Behavioral Adaptations allow animals to respond to life needs.
Now let’s learn about Behavioral Adaptations… Behavioral Adaptations allow animals to respond to life needs.

16 Behavioral Adaptations are animals’ actions.
Remember that Physical Adaptations are body structures. Each organism has unique methods of adapting to its environment by means of different actions.

17 Innate Learned We can divide Behavioral Adaptations into two groups:
These behaviors happen naturally & don’t have to be learned. These behaviors must be taught.

18 Innate behaviors happen naturally & don’t need to be learned =
Methods of gathering & storing food Hibernating Defending oneself Finding shelter Raising young Migrating

19 Behavioral Adaptations
Migration - seasonal or periodic movement of animals in response to changes in climate or food availability, or to ensure reproduction. Migration most commonly involves movement from one area to another and then back again. Examples: geese, whales, salmon, Monarch butterflies

20 Behavioral Adaptations
Hibernation – adaptive winter survival technique where animal becomes inactive and all body processes slow down. In cold weather most animals must eat large quantities of food to obtain the energy needed to carry on normal body activities. Examples: bears, chipmunks, squirrels, bats,

21 Behavioral Adaptations
3. Living in a Group – more eyes in a group to watch out for prey or predator, protection Examples: fish, wildebeest, walruses, lions

22 Learned behaviors Obtained by interacting with the environment and cannot be passed on to the next generation except by teaching. =

23 I have learned to live in your backyard.

24 I have learned to adapt to my new home.

25 Learned Behavior Tool Use - any object manipulated by an animal in order to perform a specific task. (monkeys, otters, birds) Playing Dead - By pretending that they are dead, some animals escape bodily harm. (snakes, possums)

26 Behavioral Physical animal adaptations.
In this lesson, we have learned about animal adaptations. There are 2 ways to describe adaptations: Behavioral Physical and

27 Behavioral Adaptations are animals’ actions.
Behavioral Adaptations can be Innate or Learned.
