The Teacher Who Changed My Life
By : Ahmad Konbaz.

( The Author ) Nicholas Gage was born in Greece in and immigrated to the United States ten years later. In this story, he writes about an inspirational teacher who paved the way for his career as a writer. The essay first appeared in Parade magazine in 1989 and is adapted from Gage’s book of the same year, A Place for Us, which focuses on his adjustment to life in the United States.

( Setting ) The story set in the newspaper club in Chandler Junior High School in New York, the United States in 1953.

( Mood )   The mood of the story was sentimental in the beginning since Gage shared his background with the readers. He immigrated to the U.S. due to the pursuit of Greek Communist guerrillas. His mom, Eleni Gatzoyiannis, sacrificed her life to promote the freedom of her beloved children. She planned an escape for her children.

( Characters ) Nicolas Gage, the Greek-American author, narrator, and protagonist .  Marjorie Hurd, the inspiring teacher of Nicholas Gage, changed Gage's life by teaching him newspaper editing skills and reading various literature.

( Narration )  "The Teacher Who Changed My Life" was written in first- person point of view because the narrator used "I" to refer to himself. It was noteworthy to point out that both the narrator and the author was Nicholas Gage. First-person point of view allowed the readers to see the opinions, thoughts, and feelings of the narrator, which strongly increased the readers' concentration on the narrator. It's significant for the story to have this type of narration because the story is a nonfiction and an autobiography, which refers to the major changes in the author's life, and the readers can gain more information from the author's own perspective and understand how Gage's turning point of life shapes him. However, readers should beware of the biases in the first-person narration since we merely look at the world through the perspective of the narrator.

( Theme )  The theme of the story was that a teacher can change people's lives. The evidence was that the tile was called "The Teacher who Changed my Life" and Gage was inspired by his mentor and muse, Miss Hurd, who is the turning point of his life. Miss Hurd taught Gage newspaper editing skills, grammatical structures, knowledge from a variety of literature, and passion for writing. Furthermore, she encouraged Gage to write about his Greek heritage and culture, and submitted to a contest, which raised Gage's fame and promoted Gage to gain sympathy and understanding from his schoolmates.

( MY Personal Reaction )
After I read the story, I felt that warmth surged my heart and smile stretched my mouth. An urge of rereading filled in my mind, I managed to recall how Miss Hurd changed Gage's life. I loved the text because the conflicts were clear and the character changes were heart touching. I underwent the changes in Gage's life, and empathized how much he respected and missed Miss Hurd. Moreover, following the progress of the story, the text expressed different moods clearly, which gave the readers plenty of emotions. The nostalgic text aroused my feelings for the teacher who treated us students as her children. The story touched me since I had an urge to write a letter to the teacher.
