2 Recovery Ministry Overview
-SESSION 2- Recovery Ministry Overview Nate Graybill and Ann Daly

3 Introductions SESSION 2 | RECOVERY MINISTRY OVERVIEW

4 Questions To Consider Is your church at the top of the list of places to seek help for your members? What about people in your community? Is your church a primary care center, triage center, an emergency room, or hospital for those dealing with hurts, habits, or hang-ups? Is your church a safe environment for your staff and members to confess sin and recover from the damage of sin? Who are the people in your church, who know how to help others heal and become spiritually healthy? What is your church strategy to help a hurting world? Does your current strategy produce fully devoted followers of Christ? SESSION 2 | RECOVERY MINISTRY OVERVIEW

5 Why People Go Elsewhere For Help
“Terminally unique” – there is no one here who struggles like me or knows how to handle my struggles Afraid of being known Pastors/staff don’t have time or don’t want to get “messy” Church culture is not a safe environment for healing Church does not have the “expertise” SESSION 2 | RECOVERY MINISTRY OVERVIEW

6 The Result: People Disconnect from Church
Church is not shepherding the flock Missed opportunities for discipleship, care and correction, restoration People are isolated within the church (“No one understands or cares”) Struggling person shares limited info/no accountability Shallow, inauthentic relationships/fellowship (staff and leaders, too) People go to 3rd party counselors Struggling person leaves the church Cut God out of the problem altogether SESSION 2 | RECOVERY MINISTRY OVERVIEW

7 God’s Plan A: The Church
Galatians 6:2 (bear each other’s burdens), James 5:16 (confess to one another and heal together), 1 John 1:7-9 (authentic fellowship) We, the Church, are to shepherd God’s flock by: God’s Spirit (1 Corinthians 2:10-16) God’s Word (2 Timothy 3:16-17) God’s People (2 Corinthians 1:3-5) SESSION 2 | RECOVERY MINISTRY OVERVIEW

8 The Answer To Every Sin Problem: Jesus
We all need recovery in Christ Jesus is the healer working through the Spirit Luke 4:18-19, Matthew 11:28-30 Every sin problem is a symptom of misplaced worship and idolatry Codependency, pride, insecurity/identity, homosexuality, overspending, addictions to alcohol/substances, guilt and shame, abuse, etc. Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. – Galatians 5:19-21 SESSION 2 | RECOVERY MINISTRY OVERVIEW

9 Biblical Principles For Discipleship
Vision: The local church should be where the world turns for healing, hope, and authentic fellowship in Christ Everyone needs recovery in Christ: recovery = discipleship = sanctification Authentic leadership and equipping members to minster others Culture: Safe place to be known, receive mercy, extend grace, grow, deal with sin together Authentic small groups for us to grow in Christ together Establish environments and tools for healing and equipping (ministries, curriculum, training) SESSION 2 | RECOVERY MINISTRY OVERVIEW
