19 Characterization Characterization is a word that describes how the author develops the personality of the story characters in a story.

20 Types of Characterization
Direct Characterization In DIRECT CHARACTERIZATION authors tell the readers exactly what they want them to know about a character. i.e. Harriet was a nasty little girl who was mean to everyone. DIRECT CHARACTERIZATION is mostly used in children’s stories. Indirect Characterization In INDIRECT CHARACTERIZATION authors shows the readers the character’s personality through the character’s actions, the character’s reactions, the character’s interactions and dialogue. i.e. Harriet kicked the ball sending it flying at the kindergarten class. She smiled as one of the smaller children began to cry. INDIRECT CHARACTERIZATION follows the “show don’t tell” structure of good narrative writing.

21 Characterization Comes through what characters And Characters become real life breathing people to our readers IF we describe decisions they make, what they say, and how they say it! Sometimes a writer will also reveal the thoughts running through a character’s mind. SAY

22 Indirect Characterization
Speech - What does the character say? How does the character speak? Thoughts - What is revealed through the character’s private thoughts and feelings? Effect - What is revealed through the character’s effect on other people? How do other characters feel or behave in reaction to the character? Actions - What does the character do? How does the character behave? Looks - What does the character look like? How does the character dress?

23 Type of Indirect Characterization
Characterization of Mr. Sanchez from “The Good Samaritan” Type of Indirect Characterization Examples Explanation Speech  ”I’ll be here tomorrow and we can swim.” “What are you guys doing here? You can’t be here when I’m not here!”  Mr. Sanchez makes promises, but he does not keep them. He gets mad for no good reason. Thoughts  ”The truck had just come to a standstill when Mr. Sanchez shot out of the driver’s side. He ran up to us, waving his hands in the air.”  He thought they might break something if they played basketball on the court when he wasn’t home. Effect on others  He made all of the boys, including Rey very angry and frustrated because he kept making promises and not keeping them.  He caused tension among Rey and the other boys. They all started to hate him and not trust him. Actions  He gave them all one bag of chips and one bottle of soda and made them share it.  He had promised them more than that but he found a way to get out of it, claiming that he didn’t know there would be so many of them. Looks  His white shirt stuck to him because of his sweat. He had his head on his knees. His hair was matted with sweat  He was tired and frustrated because he could not get the tire off the car.

24 Your Turn Now you get to try to characterize Roger and Mrs. Jones from “Thank You, Ma’am” using a chart like the one I just showed you. You will have to look in the story to find the ways that the author shows us each character’s traits through their speech, thoughts, effect, actions, and looks.

25 Characterization Charts for Roger and Mrs. Jones are DUE MONDAY!
Homework Characterization Charts for Roger and Mrs. Jones are DUE MONDAY!

26 Exit Ticket 10/27/17 Which one of the FIVE methods of Indirect Characterization does the author use the most in “Thank You Ma’am?” Why do you think he chose to use that method more than the others?

27 In your triads, discuss the following:
Start-Up - Discussion 10/30/17 In your triads, discuss the following: Think of someone who is important to you. How would you describe that person if you were writing a story about them? Think about their speech, thoughts, effect on you, actions, and looks. Describe them to your partners.

28 Start-Up - Writing 10/30/17 Now write it out: Think of someone who is important to you. How would you describe that person if you were writing a story about them? Think about their speech, thoughts, effect on you, actions, and looks. Describe them in writing.

29 Your Work Today Using the Characterization Chart you did for Roger and Mrs. Jones, you will be writing a paragraph describing each character. You need to describe them physically. No more than two sentences of physical description. You also need to describe their personality traits. This should be the majority of your paragraph. You need to take the INFORMATION from your charts and REWRITE IT into complete sentences that are organized into a complete paragraph. Just copying what you wrote into the chart WILL NOT WORK FOR THIS PARAGRAPH!

30 Your paragraphs are DUE TOMORROW!
Homework Your paragraphs are DUE TOMORROW!

31 Exit Ticket 10/30/17 Which of the two characters from the story do you think is the most likeable? Why do you think so? What is it about them that makes them likeable? Give specific examples from the story!

32 In your triads, discuss the following:
Start-Up - Discussion 10/31/17 In your triads, discuss the following: When you are writing, how can you be sure that what you write is a complete sentence? What does a sentence need in order to be complete?

33 Start-Up - Writing 10/31/17 Now write it out: When you are writing, how can you be sure that what you write is a complete sentence? What does a sentence need in order to be complete?

34 Writing Complete Sentences
For a sentence to be complete, it needs three things: It must have a SUBJECT. The most important word in the subject is the NOUN! It must have a PREDICATE. The most important word in the predicate is the VERB! It must be a COMPLETE THOUGHT. In addition, a sentence MUST begin with a CAPITAL letter and end with PUNCTUATION!

35 Plural Nouns A PLURAL noun is a word that names MORE THAN ONE of something. There are several ways by which we make singular nouns into plural nouns. To make most nouns plural JUST ADD S. If the noun ends in: s, z, sh, ch, or x ADD ES. If the noun ends in Y, change the Y to an I and then add ES. Some nouns have their own special plural forms.

36 Homework Your worksheets are DUE TOMORROW! We will go over them in class, but they should be COMPLETE when you come in!

37 Exit Ticket 10/31/17 Do you find it difficult to figure out the way to make a noun plural? Why or why not? Will knowing the rules we went over today make it easier? How?

38 Start-Up - Writing 11/1/17 Now write it out: Write me FIVE (5) complete sentences. In each one, circle the noun that is the SUBJECT and underline the VERB.

39 Choosing the Right “To Be” Verb Form
“To Be” verbs tell what the subject IS or IS LIKE. These are also known as linking or helping verbs. Choosing the right “to be” verb form can be very difficult! One thing to remember is that the VERB SHOULD ALWAYS MATCH THE SUBJECT! If you using I, use AM If you are using he, she or it; use IS If you are using we, you or they; use ARE

40 Choosing the Right Action Verb Form
Action verbs tell when the subject DOES something. If the subject is SINGULAR, add an S to the verb. He rides the bus. If the subject is PLURAL, don’t add an S. We ride the bus.

41 Homework Your worksheets are DUE TOMORROW! They should be COMPLETE when you come in!
