BELLWORK: 10/22 Our first “type of war” and “case study of warfare” is guerrilla war in the Algerian War of Independence. As an introduction to guerrilla war tactics/strategies, read pgs and answer the following questions: How does guerrilla war differ from conventional war? List the strategies and tactics of a guerrilla army. (Include how they acquire supplies) What challenges does guerrilla war pose for occupying forces? Summarize decolonization. What may cause a movement to use guerrilla warfare in an effort to “decolonize?”

Review Discussion When studying 20th century warfare, IB divides the conflicts into different “types” of war (total, limited, guerilla, civil, revolutionary). Is it possible for a war to be multiple types? Why or why not? Think of some examples!!! How did WWII impact European empires & colonies? Who was Charles de Gaulle? Despite European powers giving independence to colonies, France was willing to go to war to maintain control of Algeria. Make a prediction why do you think this is? What would cause France to maintain tight control of Algeria?
