Disappointment is an expected response, but how deep did the disappointment run? Were you able to “snap back” or do you still carry that disappointment with you?

5 Motif vs. Theme Motif is a large universal idea (something everyone can understand) Love, death, lust, greed, bulling, growing up, etc. It can be located by reoccurring, images, words, conflicts, etc Each characters eyes are described in detail The word lust is continually repeated All of the conflict surround feuding couples. A theme is the author message about the motif that he/she develops through the course of their writing. Love is an unbreakable bond. Love is dangerous and should be avoided Love makes all things possible

6 Think music…Think about songs that deal with love! (Too many to name)
“Thinking Out Loud” Ed Sheeran “Stay with Me” Sam Smith “I hate you, I love you, I hate that I love you” Gnash All these songs are about love (the motif), but do they all have the same message (the theme)? Really depends on the day with this one…. “Love Story” “We are Never Ever Getting Back Together” Taylor Swift

7 Connections! Setting (time and place)
This setting impacts the way that you act Characterization (Because you are What types of conflicts you’ll get into and how you’ll get out of them Conflict The resolution to the conflicts develop the theme. Different resolutions = different themes Themes The author’s message

13 Suns chapters 1-4 The novel opens with a curse word, uttered in frustration by Mariam’s mother, when Mariam breaks a treasured heirloom. What does Mariam’s memory of this suggest about her sense of herself and her relationship with her mother? How does this opening set the tone for the novel? Based on Nana’s and Mariam’s experiences, what can you infer about the lives of women in Afghanistan in the sixties? Why does Nana forbid Mariam to go to school? What does Nana want for her and Mariam? Is the goal realistic? What are Nana’s feelings about Jalil? What does she feel is his penance? What did she have happen to her to make her feel this way? Jalil, Mariam’s father is a complex character. Does he love his daughter? How does he show his love? How does he show that he does not fully recognize her as his daughter? Why does he treat her as he does?

15 Gathering quotes and what you should be doing with them besides highlighting:
Note Taking Note Making “I was always learning things about Baba from other people” (Hosseini 18). This shows how Amir has a strained relationship with his father and that he lacks a personal connection with him. “ I worshipped Baba with intensity approaching the religious. But Right then, I wished I could open my veins and drain his cursed blood from my body” ( Hosseini 32). Because of that strained relationship that Amir and Baba share, Amir is internally conflicted with his love and admirations for his father. This could prove to be a major factor in the choices Amir makes.
