Next Monday…….. From next week onwards you are going to learn Dutch. This is not the most spoken language in the world. How many people do speak Dutch? In The Netherlands? In the world? At this moment: over 17 millions of people in the Netherlands. And over the world about 24 millions of people! And after the next 7 weeks: some ….more! Today is the only moment that we are speaking English. From Monday onwards we’ll only speak Dutch! How is that possible? How to achieve this goal? We all need to be prepared very thoroughly. That’s the reason we are here today. I will inform you about how to prepare your classes. Vanaf aanstaande maandag spreek ik alleen Nederlands en jij ook! Hoe kan dat? Dat is alleen mogelijk als we allemaal goed voorbereid zijn. Daarom zijn we vandaag hier.

This introduction lesson
Language learning and the Delft Method How to prepare your classes Course organisation Questions Aim of today’s introduction is telling you what you need to know to start properly. First we are talking about the Delft Method. Perhaps this method is different from the way you have learned languages before. Second we’ll speak about your preparation at home. Please be aware that is takes a lot of time! It is important to know how to study effectively. Third: I will give you some information about the course organisation. And at the end there is time available for all your questions that have not been answered during the presentation
4
1. Language Learning and The `Delft Method’
5
Natural Unconventional Speedy …
Language learning via the Delft Method may be different from the way you have learned languages till now. - How have you been learning English at school? Via word lists? Grammar books? Exercises? What did you do in class?
6
Input, that’s what you need!
Focus on skills instead of conscious knowledge During the courses we are focussing more on skills than on knowledge. What did you do as a child while learning to understand and to use your language? Listening! What you need to learn a new language is input. A lot of input. And one day you started talking back. Of course with mistakes, but that wasn’t a problem at all. We try to follow that way a little bit. The Delft Method offers you lots of input, and you are communicating in your new language from the first day. How have you learned your mother language? Listening, and one day you started talking back, trial and error. We try to follow that process of language learning; we try to follow the natural way. That’s al lot of work, we can’t put a chip in your brain. So it will cost you time and effort. OK, input! The input that you need to learn a language consists of the building blocks of that language, like LEGO bricks.. What sort of input do you need? Input, that’s what you need!
7
Language Learning: not difficult Building blocks versus puzzles
Puzzle blocks can only fit one way. Using languages means flexibility and creativity. With LEGO bricks you can build whatever you want! What are the LEGO bricks, the most important building blocks for building languages? WORDS-WORDS-WORDS
8
woorden woorden woorden
The LEGO bricks! Via the Delft Method you will learn about 100 new words each day. The course material is based on the most frequent Dutch words. The words are learnt via texts, so like natural language learning via a context. Input consists of natural language, not of word lists. Like LEGO blocks you can combine the words to whatever you want. You can build your own combinations. During the course you will learn how to combine the words, how to put the blocks of the language in an acceptable combination. You will learn these building skills by using the language; communication is what language is meant for. SO learning by doing, like swimming or driving a car. The first week you can build a simple car or a small house. With your first LEGO box you did not start building rockets or castles. But after 7 weeks, …….Perhaps you can build a nice house with 3 floors and a garden, and may be even with a car! woorden woorden woorden
9
The classes: focus on skills
learning by doing The classes are mainly devoted to doing, to practicing the new language. During the classes we will have natural and interesting conversations with each other, in Dutch only, using the words that you’ve learned so far. How is that possible? It is possible for everyone after your preparation at home! How to prepare your classes? Zoals gezegd: Dus vanaf maandag spreken wij Nederlands! Maar….. Dat is niet mogelijk zonder een grondige voorbereiding.
10
2. HOW TO PREPARE YOUR CLASSES
The class conversation is based on the texts in the book. Before each lesson you prepare the text at home. The texts in the book offer you the Dutch language, including translations, pronunciation, combinations, et cetera. These texts are the main component of the course materials.

The audio is a very essential part of the Delft Method. The method consists of texts. The Dutch language is offered you via those texts, spoken and written as well. These texts form the base of the method. The texts are built with very frequent Dutch words, the words that we use most. Translations of all the words are available in 26 languages. OK, let’s go through the study materials together! Boek erbij tekst Woordenlijsten Gatentekst Grammatica Oefenboek niet verplicht. Biedt extra oefening (met NL partner) > Verkrijgbaar bij…

Each lesson consists of 3 Steps: Preparation at home Conversation in class Pc test The first Step: your preparation at home test computer
13
Aim for homework & classes
1. understand a spoken text without help >> Learn the texts (2-3 hours per text!) 2. ability to speak about the text in a conversation >> Speak during the classroom conversation The total course load is 40 hours a week! The first aim of the homework is to understand the audio of the text without any help. You will need 2-3 hours per text to achieve this goal. Understanding a spoken text without any help is the last step in the self study program. Before there are several steps with help. The second aim of the homework is your ability to speak about the topics of the text, using the new words and word combinations. You can practice this at home. Try to speak to yourself or with an imaginary friend. After your preparation at home you will be able to join the conversation in class and also to do the computer test after the lesson. This test is a dictation. You listen to randomly chosen sentences from the text and you type what you’ve just heard. Then you have to focus on the details.

Als je goed voorbereid bent, is er geen reden bang te zijn. >> demo GB erbij en de stappen doornemen. Listen & repeat/ Luisteren & nazeggen! Daarna samenvatten met volgende dia’s. test computer
15
Step 1 Step 2 listening reading repeat out loud sentence by sentence
translation Step 2 as Step 1, but without pauses Step 1: with lots of help Listening-reading-translations- pauses/ repeating out loud: check your pronunciation Several times Also focus on the details: do I hear every word? Also the very small ones? Do I understand the construction of the sentence? The word order? Step 2: gradually less help. Reading-listening & understand! NO pauses, only input: do you still understand the sentence?
16
Step 3 Step 4 Listening without reading sentence by sentence
repeat out loud 5, 6, 7, … times until you understand and can repeat everything easily Step 4 as step 3, but without pauses Step 3: Without text, with pauses to repeat out loud Step 4: without text, without pauses
17
Step 5: test After having studied the text!
Did I study the text properly? Listen > write 80% correct less 80% > go back to step 1 -3 Step 5: Luistertraining & luistertest Dictation. Check if you’ve studied properly. Details and spelling are important to pass the test: 80% correct before continuing. Luister en typ x/x woorden correct Minder dan 80% is een stap terug
18
Step 6: exercise After having studied the text!
Gap fill exercise + feedback Step 6: Exercises/Oefeningen. Final check before coming to class. After a good preparation there is no need to be scared about the conversation classes. De gatentest doe je pas als je de tekst goed kent! Denk aan een gesprek in een drukke straat: ook al mis je een paar woorden, je kunt toch begrijpen wat iemand zegt. > kennis van de taal Wanneer je goed gestudeerd hebt, ben je goed voorbereid voor de les. Geen reden voor angst. Nu ben je klaar om naar de les te gaan, maar bedenk: de voorbereiding van een tekst kost je 2 tot 3 uur!

Learning step by step Help 6x 4x 7x 5x Step 1 Listening With pauses
Reading Translations 7x Step 2 Listening Reading Translations 5x Step 3 Listening With pauses Step 4 Listening Step 5 + 6 Exercises Test In summary: the study steps Make sure that you follow all the steps one by one. Only continue to the next step when the first step is easy. If a step is still difficult, don’t continue but go back to the former step and repeat as many times as necessary. This process will cost you about 3 hours per text. Then you’re ready to talk, to prepare for the conversation. Start speaking with yourself at home, using the questions in the book. >> demo GB erbij en de stappen doornemen. Learning step by step: going through the text with gradually less help. Let’s have a look at all the steps together.
20
Preparing for the conversation
After each text: Questions (vragen) Speaking (spreken) Speaking about the text Preparation for the conversation: after you have learned the text properly. Use the conversation questions in your text book. Maybe you have a room mate to practice with? Ask yourself: what would I ask if I were the teacher? How can we use this text to have an interesting conversation?
21
Some good advice Do not fill in the gaps in the book
Do not write translations in the text Do not copy the text Do not learn the texts by heart Understanding is not enough: have attention for form: put the text under the microscope! Use all senses simultaneously: read + listen + speak Study actively: USE the words, make your own sentences Don’t be afraid to speak or to make mistakes You now know how to prepare for the lessons. Last but not least: some good advice. Try to keep your book proper and empty. Writing words in the gap text is not helpful. The gap texts in the book are useful to check if you’ve studied properly. Repeating texts is important; so please don’t write the fitting words in the book. The words have to come in your head, not in the book. Try not to write translations in your book. Than you’ll see the words in your own language instead of the Dutch ones. Try to translate in your head instead. Some people copy all the texts. But from research we know that this is not effective and not helpful at all. Besides it takes a lot of time. Try to keep listening actively all the time. So do not learn the texts by heart. Listening, reading and understanding is not enough. Try also to pay attention to the details of the texts: put each text under a microscope. Have attention for the form of the texts as well. Have you mentioned all the words? Have you mentioned the word order? The spelling? Learning a language is using all your senses simultaneously: read + listen + speak. Learning with your whole body is the right way to learn/acquire new skills. Remember the way children acquire their mother language: via trail and error. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. That’s part of the learning process.

Classes mainly devoted to conversation only in Dutch, from day 1:
conversations on topics in the text knowledge of the text is essential fun and interesting do participate in the conversation, don’t wait for your turn not much grammar explanation Classes are devoted to conversation. We’ll only speak Dutch from day one. That is possible: the teacher and the other classmates only use the words that you’ve learned so far. So everyone can join the conversation. And that is what the teachers expect you to do. After a good preparation there is no need to be afraid to speak. We ask you all to participate actively. So please feel free to interrupt and to join the conversation. Don’t wait for your turn, just participate. So everyone can profit by the classes. The teachers will provide you with feedback. In the first lesson you will experience that learning a new language can be interesting and fun. Learning Dutch goes together with having a nice conversation. Learning a new language will cost you time and effort, but believe me: you will also have lots of fun together. You are all in the same situation. you learn also from listening to other students not much grammar explanation: grammar is learned via the context of the sentences, in natural language During the conversation classes the teachers look at every one’s speaking skills. During the courses the teachers judge the student’s speaking skills.

FAQs What to do between the lessons? What if I cannot attend a lesson?
Possible to have a job / another course in this period? Do I need other materials? (dictionary, grammar book) Between the lessons you can study for the second lesson, you can have a lunch break, et cetera. If you cannot attend a lesson, please notify your teacher and the secretary as well. The course will cost you about 40 hours per week. So please organize your live properly. A combination of this full time course and other activities is almost impossible. Tell all your friends and family that you’ll not be available for them during this period. Unless they are able to practice Dutch with you . You don’t need other materials. The study method is sufficient/complete. With a study load of 40 hours per week we recommend you not to use extra materials.
