3 Vocabulary to know Historian Archeologist Artifacts Fossils Nomad
Anthropologist Technology Domestication Specialization

4 Historians People who study and collect information about the past
When did written history begin? About 5500 years ago

5 Archeologists Hunt for evidence in the ground of past ancient civilizations Look for artifacts or physical evidence left behind by civilizations as well as fossils

6 Anthropologists Focus on human interactions in a society
They study how humans relate to one another.

9 Hunter Gatherers Learned habits of animals Built tools
Eventually created spears, traps, bows and arrows Paleolithic people were the first to use tools and weapons

10 Adaptation to Environment
Adaptation was dependent upon where they lived. Colder climates, people used caves Warmer climates they used little shelter or clothing

11 Ice Age Fire key to survival of Paleolithic people
Long periods of cold Ice Age lasted from about 100,000 BC to 8000 BC Ice sheets covered portions of Europe, North America and Asia.

12 Ice Age Ice Age major threat to human life
Adapted through changing diet Used fur for clothing Mastered starting fires

13 America Settled during Ice Age
a land bridge between Asia and North America existed during the last ice age called Beringia. Ocean water locked up in glacial ice lowered sea levels to the point where a corridor up to 1600km or more wide existed between Siberia and Alaska

23 Benefits of Settled Life
Allowed for greater security Steady supply of food Better health Allowed for population growth Created markets Allowed people to specialize in different kinds of jobs

24 Benefits of Settled Life
Innovation moved forward Discovery of Bronze Used for weapons , tools Used predominately between 3000 BC to 1200 BC Better farming tools
