3 Units Units organized by Counties. Some Units are 1 County, others are 2 or 3. Each Unit has an appointed Chair and Co-chair as well as a Steering Committee Unit Areas: Atlantic/Cape May/Cumberland (A/CM/C) Bergen/Passaic (B/P) Mercer/Burlington (M/B) Camden/Gloucester/Salem (C/G/S) Essex (E) Hudson (H) Middlesex (Mx) Monmouth/Ocean (M/O) Morris (Ms) Somerset/Hunterdon (S/H) Sussex/Warren (S/W) Union (U)

4 Regional Map Northwest Region include the units of Sussex-Warren, Hunterdon-Somerset and Morris. Northeast Region include the units of Bergen-Passaic Essex, Hudson and Union. Central Region include the units of Monmouth-Ocean, Mercer-Burlington and Middlesex Southern Region include units of Camden-Gloucester-Salem, Atlantic-Cape May-Cumberland.

5 Role of Unit Chair and Co-Chair (A One Year Commitment)
Plan and host events/activities for your Unit at least four (4) times a year Communicate NASW news and information to members in conjunction with Regional Representatives Communicate Unit news and information to Chapter office to highlight in NASW publications Welcome new members in your unit and encourage others to join Encourage members to run for office and nominate members for NASW awards

6 Role of Regional Representatives
Will serve as the Board liaison to Unit leaders (Chair, Co-chair, Steering Committee) When a position becomes vacant, will help identify potential Unit leaders. Will attend Unit event(s) organized by a new Unit leader (when possible) and help leaders develop a Steering Committee for their Unit (if needed). Will help “roll out” new ideas/programs in their regions/Units (e.g. promoting Prospective SW program, share information re: Conference and CE programs, etc.). Will assist in bringing Unit leadership from their Region to report at Board events (each Unit to report annually).

7 Role of Steering Committee
A Steering Committee consists of Unit members who assist the Unit Leaders with planning and hosting Unit activities and events. Provide event refreshments, assist in finding event locations and speakers, generate service project ideas, contact new members, and PR. The Committee helps to engage Unit members and develop future leadership.

11 Unit Events ~ The Basics
Types of Events Networking, social, educational, continuing education, social work month event, advocacy, public service, or volunteer Location to Host & Time Assisted living facilities, libraries, non-profit organizations, Chapter office, restaurants Events run 2-hours, weekday evenings or weekends. Choose a Topic & Invite a Speaker Unit member, Chapter staff, social work or other professionals Involve Your Members Ask for ideas Invite them to join Steering Committee Encourage them to bring a friend (non-members can attend one event before they are asked to join.)

12 Unit Event ~ Announce Your Event
Schedule & Promote Your event to NASW Members (in this order please): Fill out the Meeting Announcement online form (available in Unit Manual) at least 30 days prior to the event Staff will post event on NASW Calendar Send an to your Unit Members to announce event; include the Calendar Link and ask members to register online; ALSO be sure to include “NASW-NJ” in the subject line. Chapter will promote event in newSWire™; Send out 2 reminder s to your Unit members: one two weeks before the event and another a few days before event; Promotion should not imply endorsement of a specific person, product, or service by NASW or NASW-NJ. **IMPORTANT – We recommend that you send from the address NASW-NJ has on file, otherwise your will not be transmitted.

13 Unit Event ~ Hosting Networking time before event. Meet and welcome 1st time attendees. Welcome & Introductions – (Photo opportunity. Specifically welcome new Members/students/new attendees. Invite sharing from all: where do you work? What is your NASW involvement?) Welcome Regional Rep and/or NASW-NJ Staff (if present). Share NASW/NASW-NJ News & Upcoming Events with attendees (if no Regional Rep or Staff) Purchase simple refreshments (maximum $7.50 per person) based on headcount (pizza & soda, donuts & coffee, or appetizers) Sign-in sheet (available in Unit Manual) Speaker, Program or Discussion Topic Talk with new Members, students, 1st time attendees at the end of the event. Encourage them to return for other events. Fill out event Summary online form (available in Unit Manual) and send an to Christina Mina pictures you have from the event (no PDFs please).

Group Instructions You can send to your members via the feature on the chapter’s website. Please follow the instructions below: After you log in you will be at your profile page. Under “My Profile”: Select “Groups” At the “My Groups” page select Group Type Name: Your Unit’s name At the “Unit Name” page select “Options” icon (looks like a tool wrench) At the drop down window select “ All Group Members” Compose Preview your Send or Submit your RSVP Public Results link will be sent to Unit leader to view member RSVPs.

19 Continuing Education Events
Units can offer CEU events as a way to encourage attendance and recruitment. Two CEU workshops exclusive for the Unit each year Call Kendra Hayes, Director of Continuing Education, at least 60 days in advance, to discuss topics and schedule program. Identify and reserve free location (minimum of 30 seats). Check with your Unit members ~ they often have ideas for program locations including agencies, schools or libraries. Chapter will promote event ONLY to Unit Members Promote your event to your members through your Group Chapter will mail CEU materials and instructions to Chair Remember: Non-members will pay $30 at the door

20 Recruitment & Retention
Member Requests Forward all member requests to Membership Coordinator to resolve. For example: Change of Change of address Add to/Remove from listserv Advertising requests Other requests New Members You will receive reports (of your new members) once a month from Membership Coordinator Call and/or send an to new unit members once a month (review templates in Unit Manual). Introduce yourself, welcome members, and invite them to your next event ASK UNIT LEADERS TO ASK THEIR (NEW) UNIT MEMBERS IF THEY RECEIVED “WELCOME” LETTER FROM THE CHAPTER VIA OR HARD COPY?? Please advise any members who say they are not receiving s to check their spam filters and to add s from the listserv to the “safe sender list” Leadership Continuity Encourage & nurture consistent attendance Discuss topics of interest to attendees Recognize & mentor potential unit leaders Establish Steering Committee to provide leadership opportunities to others; encourage consideration of leadership position.

24 CEU Incentive for Unit Leaders
Unit Leadership Training = 1 CEU Voucher 4 Unit events = 1 CEU Voucher You may receive a maximum of 5 CEU Vouchers during any given fiscal year. CEU Vouchers are not redeemable for the Annual Conference or special CEU events. CEU Vouchers may not be transferred to other members. In an effort to show our appreciation for all of the work that you do as Volunteer Staff all Unit Leaders who attend this training will receive a voucher redeemable for use towards 1CEU. We will have 2 training sessions per year for which you will receive a voucher for use towards one CEU. An additional CEU Voucher will be given to each Unit leader who hosts 4 Unit events of any kind during the fiscal year. Unit leaders may receive up to 5 CEU Vouchers in a given fiscal year culminating from 2 trainings and 12 Unit events. These vouchers will be redeemable at NASW-NJ CEU events that may be held throughout the year, they may not be used for the Annual Conference or NASW-NJ events designated as “special” events.
