3. Screen Readers
Struggling readers and auditory learners comprehend best when print and sound are presented together.
Screen readers can also help support independence in the editing and revision step of the writing process- listen to your work before you submit it.
Speak Selection
Even with VoiceOver turned off, you can have iPad read aloud any text you select.
Turn on Speak Selection. Go to Settings > General > Accessibility > Speech. There you can also:
Adjust the speaking rate
Choose to have individual words highlighted as they’re read
Have text read to you. Select the text, then tap Speak.
You can also have iPad read the entire screen to you. See Speak Screen. (Covered later in this presentation.)
This is the same reason it is recommended you use closed captioning.

4. Alex Voice
Alex is an extra download, it will use storage space. Alex’s voice uses natural intonation, a fast speaking rate, and evaluates paragraphs instead of words to pronounce homonyms correctly.
To activate Alex: Select text, send to iTunes as a spoken track, choose voice Alex.
What you need
If you have one of these devices, you'll have the option to download and enable Alex.

Your device needs at least 870 MB of available free space to use Alex.
How to download and use Alex
You can choose Alex for VoiceOver and for Speak Screen and Speak Selection. Follow these steps.
Use Alex for VoiceOver
Go to Settings > General > Accessibility > VoiceOver > Speech.
If you're using English on your device, choose Default Dialect > English (U.S.) > Alex.
If your device is using another language by default, you'll need to add English as a Rotor Language. To do this, follow these steps:
Go to Settings > General > Accessibility > VoiceOver > Speech > Add New Language.
Choose English (U.S).
Tap the More Info button next to English (U.S.) from the Rotor Languages list.
Select Alex.
To Use Alex for Speak Screen and Speak Selection
Go to Settings > General > Accessibility > Speech > Voices and choose Alex.
Wait for Alex to download and install
After you've selected Alex, if you're connected to Wi-Fi, the download will begin. When the download is complete, your device will install Alex. When that's finished, if your device is using English, Alex will start speaking.
If you decide that you no longer want Alex installed, you can remove the voice by going to Settings > General > Accessibility > VoiceOver > Speech and swiping from right to left on the voice. Then tap the Delete button.

5. Speak Screen
After turning this feature on, if you swipe down with two fingers, the iPad will read all content on the screen.
If you are reading a book, the iPad will automatically turn the page for you when it reaches the bottom of the page.
You can also activate this by saying “Siri, Speak screen.”
iPad can read the contents of the screen to you, even if you don’t use VoiceOver.
Turn on Speak Screen.
Go to Settings > General > Accessibility > Speech.
Have iPad speak the screen.
Swipe down from the top of the screen with two fingers. *START WITH YOUR FINGERS NOT TOUCHING THE SCREEN* Use the controls that appear to pause speaking or adjust the rate.
Ask Siri.
Say “speak screen.”
You can also have iPad read just the text you select—see Speak Selection.

6. Highlight Content
With this feature the iPad will highlight content as it is spoken.
Turn on Speak Screen.
Go to Settings > General > Accessibility > Speech.
Highlight what’s being spoken.
Turn on Highlight Content (a command that appears when you turn on Speak Screen), and the current word is highlighted as it’s spoken.

7. Magnifier
Magnifier option is activated using a triple-click on the Home button.
Magnifier
Use Magnifier to magnify objects near you.
Set up Magnifier. Go to Settings > General > Accessibility > Magnifier, then turn on Magnifier. This adds Magnifier to Accessibility Shortcut.
Start Magnifier. Triple-click the Home button. If you have multiple accessibility shortcuts, tap Magnifier.
Adjust the magnification level. Drag the Zoom Level slider.
Add more light. Tap to turn the flashlight on or off.
Lock the focus. Tap . Tap again to unlock the focus.
Freeze the frame. Tap . To adjust the magnification, drag the Zoom Level slider. To save the image, touch and hold the image, then tap Save Image. To unfreeze the frame, tap again.
Apply color filters. Tap . Tap the different color filters to preview their effects. To adjust the brightness and contrast, drag the sliders. To invert the colors, tap . To apply the selected filter and return to Magnifier screen, tap again.
Turn off Magnifier. Click the Home button.

8. Improving Readability
Reader Button
Use Safari Reader to have your browser show only the article. This removes potential distractions for readers such as advertisements, menu bars and external links.
Modify the font, text size, text and background color as desired.
The article can then be read using the Speak tool.
Not available for all websites.
You can use Safari Reader to view a webpage article in one page, formatted for easy reading, and presented without ads, navigation, or other distracting items. You can adjust font, font size, and background color for Reader.
View an article using Reader
Click the Reader button  at the left end of the Smart Search field. The button appears only if the webpage has an article that Reader can show.
Change how your webpages look in Reader
In Reader, click the letter button  that appears at the right end of the Smart Search field, then do any of the following to adjust the settings:
Choose a font size.
Choose a white, sepia, gray, or black background.
Choose a font.
Reader always shows you the last font, size, and background you chose.
Stop using Reader:
Click the Reader button  again or press Esc on an external keyboar.

There are two options for screen reading on Android devices
TalkBack
Use this if you want to interact with your Android using touch and spoken feedback because you have significant visual issues
Select to Speak
Use this if you want to hear specific words or pages read
TalkBack Information
Select to Speak Information (Android v5.1+)
Step 1: Turn on Select to Speak
Open your device's Settings app .
Tap Accessibility, then tap Select to Speak.
If you don't see Select to Speak, go to Google Play to download the latest version of TalkBack, then try these steps again.
At the top, turn on Select to Speak.
Note: You can set an accessibility shortcut to turn on Select to Speak. You can then press and hold the volume keys for 3 seconds to turn on Select to Speak.
Step 2: Use Select to Speak
Tap the Accessibility button .
If you don't see this icon, you might be using an earlier version of TalkBack. Refer to the steps for earlier versions below.
Tap an item on your screen, like text or an image.
To hear multiple items, drag your finger across the screen.
To hear everything, tap Play .
When the player is open, use the buttons to pause or play, skip forward or backward, and to increase or decrease speed.
Note: Select to Speak might not work with every browser.

11. Magnifier
You can use the magnifier to make the whole screen larger using a triple tap.
Magnification
You can zoom or magnify to see your Android device's screen better.
Step 1: Turn on magnification
Open your device's Settings app .
Open Accessibility, then Magnification.
Choose either Magnify with triple-tap or Magnify with button.
If you don't see these options, you might be using an earlier version of Android. Turn on Magnification, then follow the steps below for magnify with triple-tap.
Step 2: Use magnification
Magnify with triple-tap
Zoom in and make everything bigger
Triple-tap anywhere on the screen, except the keyboard or navigation bar.
Now you can pan or adjust the zoom level:
To pan across the screen, drag two or more fingers.
To adjust the zoom level, pinch two or more fingers together or spread them apart.
To zoom out, triple-tap the screen.
Temporarily magnify the screen
Triple-tap and hold anywhere on the screen, except the keyboard or navigation bar.
To move the magnified area, drag your finger across the screen.
To stop magnifying, lift your finger.
Magnify with button
Tap the Accessibility button .
Tap anywhere on the screen, except the keyboard or navigation bar.
To zoom out, tap the Accessibility button .
Touch and hold anywhere on the screen, except the keyboard or navigation bar.
Notes
After you turn on magnification, single taps take slightly longer. This short delay lets your device find out if your tap is part of a triple-tap.
If you open or close an app when zoomed in, you automatically zoom out. To zoom in again, simply triple-tap.

12. Font and Display
You can change the overall font and size of icons or other visuals on your Android 7.0+ phone through the settings.
Change font size
To make your font size smaller or larger:
Open your device's Settings app 
Tap Accessibility, then tap Font size
Use the slider to choose your font size
The font size setting doesn't apply to the Google Chrome app, which has its own text scaling control.
Change display size
To make items on your screen smaller or larger:
Tap Accessibility, then tap Display size
Use the slider to choose your display size
Some apps on your screen might change position.

13. Google Play Books Read Aloud
Books that you have bought through the Google Play Store can be read aloud.
Go to the three dots in the upper right corner of the book and choose Read Aloud. The phone will read the books aloud using the default voice on your phone while highlighting the sentences.
Read a book
If you haven’t already, turn on TalkBack.
Open Play Books .
If you already have the book, find it in the "Library" or "Home" screens.
If you don’t have the book, search for it at the top of the "Home" screen, then pick a result and download the book.
Open the book.
Tap the screen, then double-tap to enter skim mode.
Select More   Read aloud.
To move through the text on a page, swipe.
To flip pages, two-finger swipe left or right.

Find previous notes by going to the notebook icon in the menu

Choose to search either the web to find out more about the topic or the book to find other mentions of the highlighted words

23. Word Wise Feature
Word Wise makes it easier to enjoy and quickly understand more challenging books.
Short and simple definitions automatically appear above difficult words, so you can keep reading with fewer interruptions.
Tap on a word to bring up a simple card with definitions, synonyms, and more.
Adjust the number of hints you see with a simple slider.
To Use on an Android:
Open your book that is Word Wise Enabled
Tap the Menu button (3 vertical dots in the upper right corner)
Choose Word Wise
Check the box to show hints above challenging words when available
To Use on a Kindle
From Home, tap Menu, then tap Settings. Select Reading Options, then Language Learning. Next to Word Wise, tap On or Off.

24. How do I know if my book has Word Wise?
Word Wise is only available in books in English and is not enabled on all Kindle books. You can verify whether the feature is available by checking for "Word Wise: Enabled" or "Word Wise: Not Enabled" on Kindle book product detail pages.

Read with Flashcards
Flashcards are note cards created for select Kindle content on Kindle for Android, which include a word and definition. You can use them to test your memory of key terms and concepts.
Access Flashcards: While reading, tap the center of the page, tap the menu icon and then tap Flashcards
Create a Flashcards Decks: From X-Ray, use the drop-down menu to select the section you want to cover, tap the section title, and then tap the Flashcards icon (upper right corner of the screen) to add the terms from that page to a new deck
While reading, tap the menu icon and select Flashcards and tap the plus icon in the upper right corner of the screen to create a new deck.
Edit Flashcards:Tap Edit on a Flashcard, enter your changes, and then tap the checkmark.
To delete a Flashcard, tap Edit, tap the menu icon and select Delete.
Use Flashcards:While reading, tap the center of the screen, tap the menu icon and select Flashcards, tap the set you want to use. Tap the Flashcard to read the other side, and then tap the green checkmark for correct or the red X for incorrect.
To shuffle your set, tap the Shuffle icon.
To restart your set, tap the Refresh icon.
