3 Call to Worship – Isaiah 53:3-6

4 Beneath the Cross Of Jesus

5 Beneath the cross of Jesus, I fain would take my stand,
The shadow of a mighty rock Within a weary land; A home within the wilderness, A rest upon the way, From the burning of the noontide heat, and the burden of the day.

6 Mine eye at times can see The very dying form of one
Upon the cross of Jesus, Mine eye at times can see The very dying form of one Who suffered there for me; And from my stricken heart With tears two wonders I confess; The wonders of redeeming love, And my unworthiness.

7 Prayer for Forgiveness Fashion in us, Lord, eyes within our eyes, so that, with new eyes, we may contemplate your divine sacrifice. Create in us a pure heart, so that, through the power of your Spirit, we may inhale your salvation. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.

52 Solemn Reproaches from the Cross
Behold the Cross on which the Savior of the world was hanged. LISTEN TO HIS VOICE

53 Silence

54 The Reproaches These reproaches will be read by individuals in the congregation and the congregation is asked to respond with: LORD, HAVE MERCY

55 1) O my people, O my church, what have I done to you, or in what have I offended you? Answer me. I led you forth from the land of Egypt and delivered you by the waters of baptism, but you have prepared a cross for your Savior. LORD, HAVE MERCY

56 2) I led you through the desert forty years, and fed you with manna; I brought you through tribulation and penitence, and gave you, my body, the bread of heaven, but you have prepared a cross for your Savior. LORD, HAVE MERCY

57 3) What more could I have done for you that I have not done
3) What more could I have done for you that I have not done? I planted you, my chosen and fairest vineyard. I made you the branches of my vine; but when I was thirsty you gave me vinegar to drink and pierced with a spear the side of your Savior, and you have prepared a cross for your Savior. LORD, HAVE MERCY

58 4) I went before you in a pillar of cloud, and you have led me to the judgment hall of Pilate. I scourged your enemies and brought you to a land of freedom, but you have scourged, mocked, and beaten me. I gave you the water of salvation from the rock, but you have given me gall and left me to thirst, and you have prepared a cross for your Savior. LORD, HAVE MERCY

59 5) I gave you a royal scepter and bestowed the keys to the kingdom, but you have given me a crown of thorns. I raised you on high with great power, but you have prepared a cross for your Savior. LORD, HAVE MERCY

60 6) My peace I gave, which the world cannot give, and washed your feet as a sign of my love, but you draw the sword to strike in my name and seek high places in my kingdom. I offered you my body and my blood but you scatter and deny and abandon me, and you have prepared a cross for your Savior. LORD, HAVE MERCY

61 7) I sent the Spirit of Truth to guide you, and you close your hearts to the Counselor. I pray that all may be one in the Father and Me, but you continue to quarrel and divide. I call you to bring forth fruit, but you cast lots for my clothing, and you have prepared a cross for your Savior. LORD, HAVE MERCY

62 8) I grafted you into the tree of my chosen Israel, and you turned on them with persecution and mass murder. I made you joint heirs with them of my covenants but you made them scapegoats for your own guilt, and you have prepared a cross for your Savior. LORD, HAVE MERCY

63 9) I came to you as the least of your brothers and sisters; I was hungry and you gave me no food, was thirsty and you gave me no drink, was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me, and you have prepared a cross for your Savior. LORD HAVE MERCY

64 Silence

65 Here is Love

66 Here is love, vast as the ocean, Loving-kindness as the flood
When the Prince of Life, our Ransom, Shed for us his precious blood. Who his love will not remember? Who can cease to sing his praise? He can never be forgotten, Throughout Heav’n’s eternal days.

67 On the mount of crucifixion, Fountains opened deep and wide;
Through the floodgates of God’s mercy Flowed a vast and gracious tide. Grace and love, like mighty rivers, Poured incessant from above, And Heav’n’s peace and perfect justice Kissed a guilty world in love.

68 Let me all thy love accepting, Love Thee, ever all my days;
Let me seek Thy kingdom only. And my life be to Thy praise; Thou alone shalt be my glory, Nothing in the world I see. Thou hast cleansed and sanctified me, Thou Thyself hast set me free.

69 In Thy truth Thou dost direct me By Thy Spirit through Thy Word;
And Thy grace my need is meeting, As I trust in Thee, my Lord. Of Thy fullness thou art pouring Thy great love and power on me, Without measure, full and boundless, Drawing out my heart to Thee.
