2 TEXT BOOK READING SKILLS
There are three important reading styles that are consistent with your purpose of reading. Flexible readers (good readers) use all three techniques! SCANNING SKIMMING STUDY READING

3 TEXT BOOK READING SKILLS
SCANNING –A quick way to locate a specific piece of information within a reading selection you may be looking for a list of names, words, numbers, short statements or even a short sentence the reader will move his/her eyes over the material to find the information very low level of comprehension

4 TEXT BOOK READING SKILLS
SKIMMING – Quickly reading material to obtain a general idea about the material useful when you have to read a large amount of material in a short amount of time identify the main idea of each paragraph while ignoring the supportive details low level of comprehension

5 TEXT BOOK READING SKILLS
STUDY READING– The art of reading difficult material at a high level of comprehension read at a slower rate than you usually do need to understand the material may need to read more than once high level of comprehension

6 TEXT BOOK READING SKILLS
Skim the chapter or section you are about to read. Pay attention to the chapter name, section names and sub section names Pay attention to words that are highlighted, italicized, bolded, or written in a different font or size Look for information that you already are familiar with. What do you already know? What looks like it is new and challenging?

7 TEXT BOOK READING SKILLS
Read the textbook, or at least the section that has been assigned before coming to class. Stay ahead of the curve! Look for and seize the main idea of each reading assignment. Be comfortable with the main idea before continuing. Actively read the text. Pen in hand, taking notes.

8 TEXT BOOK READING SKILLS
Make up potential questions as you read the text. Use sticky notes, sticky arrows, and paperclips to distinguish important ideas You do not need to reread material that you are comfortable with. Do not be afraid to re read material if you do not understand it DO NOT read the entire chapter at one time. There is way too much information!

9 TEXT BOOK READING SKILLS
Read and answer the questions at the end of each section and chapter. These questions are what the authors feel are the important points of information Before beginning a worksheet or homework assignment, read the material that the teacher assigned. Do not work backwards by trying to complete assignments without reading the assigned material
