5 because it leads to a separable outcome…”
Extrinsic v. Intrinsic “doing something because it leads to a separable outcome…” Ryan, R.M. & Deci, E.L. 2000, "Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivations: Classic Definitions and New Directions", Contemporary Educational Psychology, vol. 25, no. 1, pp “doing something because it is inherently interesting or enjoyable…” “When intrinsically motivated a person is moved to act for the fun or challenge entailed rather than because of external prods, pressures, or rewards.”

6 Great for your mum to see you on telly
Global News Relay Intrinsic: Good ‘fun’ Interesting stories Extrinsic: Great for networking Great for CV Great for your mum to see you on telly Great for practicing your skills Without the pressure of being marked on it.

7 One extrinsic pressure taken away is assessment.
Giving back control One extrinsic pressure taken away is assessment. Gives back control feelings of competence will not enhance intrinsic motivation unless they are accompanied by a sense of autonomy And that: “virtually every type of expected tangible reward made contingent on task performance does, in fact, undermine intrinsic motivation.” “the more students were externally regulated the less they showed interest, value, or effort, and the more they indicated a tendency to blame others, such as the teacher, for negative outcomes.”

8 One extrinsic pressure taken away is assessment.
Giving back control One extrinsic pressure taken away is assessment. Gives back control “interpersonal events and structures (e.g., rewards, communications, feedback) that conduce toward feelings of competence during action can enhance intrinsic motivation for that action because they allow satisfaction of the basic psychological need for competence. Accordingly, for example, optimal challenges, effectance promoting feedback, and freedom from demeaning evaluations are all predicted to facilitate intrinsic motivation.”

9 A continuum of motiviation: – Do it out of fear
Extrinsic A continuum of motiviation: – Do it out of fear because they have to (external regulation) - Do it because they can see a value in it as it will further their career prospects etc. Can be enhanced by autonomy and be creating a sense of belonging to a group

15 At the point of experiencing the event the intrinsic and extrinsic
2018 At the point of experiencing the event the intrinsic and extrinsic value was realised.

16 Positive encouragement competence
Conclusion Give back control Positive encouragement competence Create sense of belonging and that not all journalists look the same Eliminate assessments… Failing that: More extra curricular Does depend on the student cohort. Does depend on staff involvement.

17 Over to you What works for you in extra curricular activities?
