1 Hierarchy of Controls More than PPE

2 Eliminate/Minimize Hazards
Elimination - completely remove hazard Substitution - find a less hazardous way (reagent, reaction set up, etc) Engineering - fume hoods, glove boxes, relief values, scrubbers, automatic shut offs, alarms, warning signs Administrative - training, work hours, prepare work area by removing incompatible materials, inspect equipment, check shelf life of materials, appropriate laboratory behavior, organized/ clean lab spaces, know critical reaction parameters (temperature, pressure, flow rate, time, sequence) PPE – think beyond the basics. Use a shield, flame resistant sleeves/ lab coat, aprons, non-synthetic fabric for clothing, boots. *Using PPE as a primary hazard control is a poor safety practice.

3 How to Eliminate/Minimize Hazards
How can you eliminate or minimize the identified risks? Standard methods include: 1. Substitution - Use a less hazardous reagent in place of a hazardous one 2. Administrative Control - Modify your procedure or reaction scheme to minimize the risk the hazardous step 3. Personal Protective Equipment* – Use appropriate PPE *A last resort when other methods fail. Using PPE as a primary hazard control is considered a poor safety practice.
