2 Food Typical items you will get to try:
Pap – sometimes call sadza – most people think this is very bland but it is used traditionally to absorb the juices from curries or stews Ugali – same thing as pap but eaten in Tanzania

3 Mandela Day The overarching objective of Mandela Day is to inspire individuals to take action to help change the world for the better, and in doing so build a global movement for good. At schools they will be encouraged to do 67 minutes of charity work. This could range from getting bread for an elderly person to working in a crèche.

4 Women’s Day Saturday 9th August 2014
A public holiday that pays homage to the women of the South African nation The mothers, the wives, the sisters and the daughters who fought tirelessly against the tyranny of the Apartheid government. Might end up getting Monday or Friday of that week off – dependent of school

5 Farmer’s Day Friday 8th August 2014
Held on the eighth day of the eighth month Learn numbers 1-8 in appropriate national language

6 Corporal Punishment Caning stills happens in the schools
It is hard for them to remove themselves from hard cultures You can ask the teachers to not do it in your sight

7 Syllabus Probably won’t show you a syllabus They will give you topics
Be prepared to teach them basic skills on the spot Be prepared to teach something other than Maths and English Be prepared to ask the pupils the topics they have covered

8 Differences in people Johannesburg – very lively and rushing around the place Limpopo – very relaxed and students inspired to do great things with their lives Tanzania – much poorer than South Africa Stellenbosch – very westernised with a relaxed atmosphere

9 Languages 11 traditional languages but the ones below you will hear and maybe use Zulu Afrikaans Sotho English Xhosa Venda

10 Patriotism Going to learn the National anthem in small groups
