Major changes to my class:
Portfolio due at end of semester Download and prep all the data Letters to Uncle Don (my granddad) and workflows weekly Activities are all focused around geology In the computer lab for all classes Course goals focused around problem solving with GIS Some new labs we are doing: Two based on replicating analysis in a paper they read Hurricanes (Scott White’s lab on SERC + hurricane frequency by county) River changes due to dam (Will Ouimet’s activity on SERC) Drainage density in Hawai’i (Nicole Gasparini’s activity on SERC) Some things I am keeping the same: Community-based learning final projects No lectures Map peer reviews and revisions based on Edward Tufte readings

New activity I designed: Read a paper and replicate the analysis in it
Haven’t done this yet; both will be completed after spring break. Will do for two papers: Henck et al and Kasprak et al. 2011 Homework: Read paper and prep datasets (evaluation: completion credit) In class and homework (total time: 3x80 min blocks, 1x2 hr 20 min block): Discuss papers and create a workflow for analysis Replicate the analysis Produce figures showing how they replicated the analysis Write a short report to accompany the figures explaining the results Evaluation: Quality of figures and report (graded with a rubric out of 20 points)
