Acquaintance Definition: An acquaintance is someone you know, but are not close friends with. Example: Joe talked to his new acquaintance, Tony, in order to get to know him better. Example: At her 10th high school reunion, she met a lot of old acquaintances she hadn’t seen in years. Ask: What is the difference between an acquaintance and a friend?

Cautiously Definition: To do something cautiously means to do it with care. Example: The woman slowly and cautiously walked on the suspension bridge in the forest. Example: Eric gently and cautiously touched the owl’s feathers. Ask: What is a synonym for cautiously? Examples include: carefully, warily…etc.

Scrounging Definition: When someone is scrounging for something, he or she is trying to obtain or collect something with difficulty. Example: Tina saw the cat scrounging through the overflowing trashcan. Example: When he found his family’s old photo albums, he started scrounging them for more photos. Ask: Describe what someone looks like scrounging through a backpack

Jumble Definition: A jumble is a confused mixture or condition.
Example: The jumble of masks and snorkels lay tangled together in the bottom of the boat. Example: His room is always a messy jumble of clothes and toys. Ask: What might you find in a jumble at the bottomof a closet?

Logical Definition: Something that is logical makes sense and is based on reason. Example: On a multiple-choice test, the girl tried to figure out the most logical answers. Example: It is not logical to go to the beach without a swimsuit. Ask: What is a logical way to arrange books?

Scornfully Definition: If you say or do something scornfully, you say it or do it in a way that shows dislike or that you are making fun. Example: The mother spoke scornfully to her son about his bad study habits. Example: The kid scornfully rejected the offer to trade notebooks with her friend Ask: When might you speak scornfully?

Trustworthy Definition: To be trustworthy means to be reliable.
Example: When you are mountain climbing, it is good to have a trustworthy partner. Example: It is usually a good idea to leave a spare house key with a trustworthy neighbor Ask: What is an antonym for trustworthy?

Complementary Definition: If two things are complementary, they combine to enhance the qualities of one another. Example: Peanut butter and jelly taste good because they are complementary foods. Ask: What foods do you think are complementary?
