1 Cumulative Impact Assessment Experiences from Europe and the Mediterranean
Dania ABDUL MALAK, PhD Cumulative Impact Tools for MSP Expert Roundtable Venice, 18 January 2018

2 Outline Adequate Integration of Land and Sea information in a meaningful way is key for understanding associated risks and opportunities on the LS continuum; Cumulative Impacts reduce the overall resilience of ecosystems. Such tools are essential to better understand and more effectively manage holistically coastal and marine resources; Resilience of marine ecosystems to pressures need to be better studied and consideration of future threats need to be addressed more in depth and are yet unsolved What are the challenges the tool seeks to address? What can the tool do / NOT do NOW? What COULD it do in the future? What are the limitations for developing the tool?

4 ESaTDOR: Building Land-Sea typologies
Development of: Simple maps on land and sea | Multi-thematic indicators |Typologies on LSI

5 ESaTDOR: Data Integration challenges
Land based data Sea based data Admin. Units (NUTs); Defined regions (coastal); Alphanumerical stats No adm. Defined units; Different data formats Marine Units of Territorial Space (MUTS)

6 Land-Sea typologies Typology Cold and hot spots
the intensity of land-sea interactions (left) in Europe and the resulting European Land Sea typologies map (right).

8 Med-IAMER: Assessing Environmental pressures
Several areas were identified potentially vulnerable to sea level rise at the Croatian coast, For the Eastern Adriatic coast, more of 100 km2 of the mainland will be flooded due to sea level rise

9 Results – Single Pressures
Coastal Toursim Pollution from Maritime transport Heavy constructions in The Western Mediterranean coast High levels of oil spills are located along the Sicilian channel Marine Litter Sinks Accumulation of marine litter in the South-Eastern Mediterranean

10 Results Cumulative impact
In our model and with this baseline information with which the model was built, the ecoregion type (Alboran, Western Mediterranean, Adriatic, and Ioanian), the type of pressure (Tourism, fisheries, aquaculture, maritime transport, marine litter, and climate change) and the level of pressures (very low to very high) and their

12 PANACeA - Streamlining management efforts in protected areas for enhanced nature protection in the Mediterranean PANACeA´s role is to synthesize results of relevant regional projects to: provide evidence and reliable data on effective transferable measures and protocols, reduce pressures on Mediterranean biodiversity and ensure the adequate provision of ecosystem services
