I. Reasons for Colonization
France’s Objectives: France set out to colonize the Vallee du St. Laurent in the th century with the 3 key objectives: Exploit resources – beaver fur, other skins & fish Populate the colony Convert the Natives

King Henry IV Obligations & Privileges of Chartered Companies: Goal of King Henry IV – to establish a settlement colony in New France Strategy: Granted chartered companies or merchants a monopoly over the fur trade in New France In return, they promised to bring settlers to develop the colony. Pierre du Gua de Monts – granted a monopoly over the fur trade - promised to settle the colony & evangelize the natives

IV. First Permanent Settlement
The Founding Quebec City – 1608 First permanent settlement (fur trade post) –called L’Habitation Founded by Samuel de Champlain - first governor of New France Strategic Location at Quebec (where the river narrows): Narrowness of the river allowed control of ships entering the river Area frequented by Natives which encouraged trade Rivers allowed easy access to fur bearing areas Samuel de Champlain – First Governor L’ Habitation– First Permanent Settlement

V. Relations with Natives
The French forged an alliance with the Maliseet, Algonquin, Innu and the Huron for economic and religious reasons: 1. Economic Reason - natives obtained furs from the natives, since the French were few in number and did not know the land In return, the French agreed to wage war against their enemy, the Iroquois 2. Religious Reason - conversion of Natives Missionaries were sent to convert the natives They used various strategies to achieve this goal: Lived amongst them Learnt the language Set up missions
